The century-old retailer is set to shutter additional locations by May 25, marking another blow to traditional shopping malls. As JCPenney battles changing consumer habits, many wonder if this iconic chain can survive the challenges still on the horizon.
For over a hundred years, JCPenney has served as a go-to destination for clothes, home décor, and memorable holiday gifts. Founded in 1902, it became a staple in malls across the United States. However, the past decade saw shifting shopper preferences and tough economic conditions, and the pandemic further accelerated the move to online retail.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
The JC Penney in Coeur d’Alene closed almost exactly five years ago.
7 out of 656 nationwide.
Best place to buy men’s dress shirts
Good quality for a reasonable price
Still one on Davis Highway in Pensacola, near Academy Sports.
what a shame JCP is going down
it was always a reliable store with good merchandise and customer service
(it did get some leftward management which chased many long-standing customers away ... and in the same recent years JCP was stocking some clearly lower-quality items...I’d chalk this one up to DBM - Death by Mismanagement.)
They tore down the one here a long time ago. They’re in the process of tearing the whole mall down, but for some reason a few stores are still open. I worked Public Safety there for a while, didn’t last very long because the place is a mess.
Hope JCP is still open in Spokane . It’s in Northtown Mall big mall where Macy’s closed a couple of years ago. Kohl’s is there too, has some nice merchandise.
JCP is still open in the Northtown Mall and the Spokane Valley Mall.
I sold shoes at JC Penney’s in my teens.
Mom bought me my first bra at JCP, Wichita Falls, TX, summer 1967. I had just turned 11.
For arguments sake let us assume their is a civilization a few light years away in another star system of our galaxy with a civilization an equal of ours today. Also assume we at this point have conquered faster than light speed in spaceships. What would we do? Study them without contact. Study them and then contact. Decide they are a menace and eliminate them.
This assumes they have the same cognitive ability and morality of us. Perhaps neither does.
It is and will be their downfall.
* many men in the women’s clothing section.
Great news, thanks.
Years ago JCP was one of the few places I could buy reasonably priced shirts in tall sizes. Then they hired an alphabet person to run the company - prices went up, and all they stocked was stuff they couldn’t give me, let alone sell. So I quit going. Haven’t been in one in years. They can close them all as far as I care.
You win the thread!
Wasn’t Penney’s pretty much the first big retail chain to “go woke?”
Didn’t they hire a guy (ahem) from HP who spent huge amounts of money on diverse marketing schemes that made their traditional customer base feel unwelcome and drove them away, and when he (ahem) was asked about this replied that Penney’s was going in a different direction, or something to that effect?
Seems like a long time ago.
