Jay Leno Pushes Bill to End Smog Checks in California for Vehicles 35 Years or Older

Comedian says it would benefit auto enthusiasts, while environmentalists say it would increase air pollution

Should old cars get a break from California’s smog check laws?

Former Tonight Show host and avid car collector Jay Leno thinks so. He’s thrown his support behind a bill in the state legislature that would exempt vehicles 35 years or older from the state’s requirement to pass a smog check test that most other California vehicles face every two years.

“I know there’s nothing more annoying than Hollywood people involved in politics,” Leno said at a rally at the state Capitol last month. “But this one’s important to me. I’m an enthusiast.”

Leno, 75, who lives in Burbank, owns an extensive collection of vehicles, including at least 181 cars and 160 motorcycles. There are dozens of rare and exotic vehicles in his collection including a McLaren P1, a Lamborghini Countach, a Ford Model T, a 1928 Bugatti Type 37A, a 1981 DeLorean and a 1909 Baker Electric Car. He writes a regular column about cars for Popular Mechanics and a hosts YouTube series, Jay Leno’s Garage.

Supporters of the bill, dubbed “Leno’s Law,” include classic car owners, hot rodders, and car clubs around the state. They say it is often difficult and expensive for pre-1990 vehicles to pass smog check tests, and there aren’t many of the vehicles left.

“It’s less than 1% of the cars on the road,” said State Sen. Shannon Grove, R-Bakersfield, who is sponsoring the legislation at Leno’s request. “We’re talking about classic car collectors. They cruise around the park. They participate in parades. It’s a very minimal impact. These are car enthusiasts. This gives people an opportunity to restore classic cars they related to in their youth. It’s so few vehicles.”

Time to let vehicles driven under a certain yearly mileage, OFF THE HOOK.
Leno might drive each one 50 miles a year and has to comply with this garbage.

As a group, the digestive gasses emitted by greeniacs stressing over this proposal are a greater impact than the exhaust emissions of the relatively few classics still on the road.

He might as well push a bill that says gasoline shall be available in California.

A smog check for any car will be the least of our problems when there’s no gas...or gas at $10 / gallon.

I average 2500 miles per year which had a gas guzzler tax. I get 27 mpg on the highway.

The truck getting half that and the soccer mom diving her SUV 35K a year are exempt.

Jay probably dumps more $$$ into stabilizer than the gas itself.

I just watched Leno riding with Biden driving his 67 300 hp vetted.

What a BS circle jerk.

Biden told Jay that he had burried the (160 mph) speedometer.

About the same time the graphics displayed “67 Vette, 0-60, 4.7 seconds.

Don't know about jay,but the engine damaging ethanol we Californians have shoved in us chaps my arse,,biggly

I buy ethanol eater gas treatment that lowers my gas mileage to save my seals , ect , so I get shafted twice.

Plus Shasta county , next to Trinity county makes me smog , but Trinity doesn't have to and I resent being treated and cheated with that discrimination.

Many of us who can't afford a new, newer, or even nice car drive old vehicles and our maintenance and repair costs are bad enough , and the added smog cost every registration renewal is bunk.

And when our cars fail, we are deprived of our only affordable transportation and lose any money we spent on repairs

The $ I could barely afford, and went in cc debt over, for repairs is lost if my car fails the smog test.

Our air is far more full of weather modification pollution than “ smog” . .

Indeed many car can be made to run cleaner then CARB specs but they won’t except them because they have after market products on them to do so.

I know that for a fact it happened to me had a car that passed smog test and refitted it and the emissions were lower.

Changed items Intake carb headers with air pump fittings
