How the pope gets paid and a look into the Vatican's finances

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church does not get paid what many consider a traditional salary. Instead, the Vatican provides for the pontiff's needs, from housing, food, transportation and other expenses in the form of stipends and allowances.

The Vatican, referred to as "the world's smallest country," is sustained by "an economy that relies on a combination of donations, private enterprises, and investments to generate revenue," according to Investopedia.

Pope Francis declined any sort of salary when he took office in 2013, The Economic Times reported back in February, adding that the pontiff at the time had a net worth of "around $16 million, which includes various assets provided to him as the pope."

The Vatican's financial situation has been in peril for years, with its annual operating deficit growing to over $90 million in 2023, according to reports. In November, Pope Francis warned that the Vatican's pension fund — which provides pensions to employees of the Holy See and Vatican City State — has been facing a "severe prospective imbalance" that "tends to grow over time in the absence of interventions," according to the Vatican News.

Born and raised catholic, believe in Christ, don't think the church is hurting.

Any way here is a picture of Joel Osteen's house.

Expecting sling and arrows from both sides, flame away.

I can’t imagine wanting to take care of something like that. It looks like it could have rooms the inhabitants have never even seen...

I’m sure the Vatican keeps two sets of books.

It’s funny when members of the Catholic Church call another church a mega church as if the Catholic Church isn’t the mega-est Church of all. Osteen would go crazy with that much in resources.

If Jesus were walking the earth today, and saw the incredible luxury the pope and the rest of the residents of the Vatican live in, I don’t think he would be happy. Just my 2 cents.

A lot of it is probably like living in the King’s palaces - much of it belongs to the nation, not to the individual.

I don’t follow any shuck and jive con man preachers. Saw through them many years ago and although I am still a Christian believer, I do not attend Church services.

Most of them are corrupted and full of Satan.

The Pope and Joel Osteen, pretty much the same guys, except Osteen living in a typical rich celebrity’s house versus the Vatican and nation status, hundreds of military bodyguards and such, OK.

As long as they live there it is as if it were their own.

what you said.... and add: in light of the fact the old pope and the new one seem to think all the rest of the world should foot the bill for illegals and the many harms that come with them.

The most notorious examples are John Pavlolitz, Al not so Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and William Barber the buffet slayer.

I’d rather have all that art in the Vatican or Buckingham Palace, than in the hands of individuals.

I’ve seen hundreds of these fakers. I use shuck and jive because I have seen so many black “preachers” when I lived in the country, but I have seen many white ones also. Color doesn’t matter.

They do it for money or to get laid or both...

I’ll take a Castle instead of my apartment...and don’t give a damn who owns it.

Well, I’d get tired of the upkeep, the lack of privacy, staff all up in my business, etc...
