I doan' believe it but what the hell. It's a cash cow for SF-a big tourist destination. Reopening it plays into MAGA sentiments. The place would have to be totally torn down and rebuilt. Taking a cue from El Salvador?

He should hire El Salvador to design it and outsource management to them. They seem to have the right model, and if ACLU lawyers don’t like it, put them in it.

Dirty Harry ended a movie there. Got me to think the whole Dirty Harry series was an advertisement for tourists to come and visit. So many have been there on the island.

Great idea!

I think I heard it was closed because it was difficult and expensive to maintain the facility.

But if cost is no object, an island is a great place for a prison.

Spend a few bucks to fix it up- money DOGE saved from the greedy liberals, and put it to work again. I think it’s a brilliant idea.

They closed it because it was falling apart. It would cost quite a bit to rebuild. The ocean salt air worked to degrade things.

Now if Trump wanted to build a brand new state of the art supermax somewhere,...

Although if they really are the worst of the worst, I say we just thunderdome them...televise it as a pay per view event. Part of the proceeds go the victims families, other part to reducing national debt.

It’s too small. Only has enough cells for 336 inmates. We’d need a much bigger prison. Since Australia turned itself back into a penal colony during Covid, just take the whole continent over and make it an island prison.

The place is a TOTAL BLAST to visit, so I’m against this plan.

I think shipping our really bad criminals offshore is a good idea.
They’ll be out of reach of most liberal lawyers.
Cheaper to imprison them and less Liberals to listen to.
They mean business in El Salvador.

Once convicted in an American court, they serve time in
a real jail. They aren’t going to be in with their
“Buds”.

That island belongs to the native people. Return it. Outsource the prisons to El Salvador

InCapacity would have to be severely reduced to acommodate a gym, media rooms, conjugal visits, law school classrooms, gender transitional facilities, and “safe spaces”, etc. Not viable!

Born and raised south of Alcatraz, when Kalifornia was California and Reagan Country.

I was thinking similar thoughts. Instead of restarting the prison, just drop any and all into the center of the Alcatraz island. Make sure that all internet / cell service is jammed. Just let them rot and kill each other. If anyone tries to tunnel, have the experienced Israelis take care of it.

Okay, one service can be allowed on the island. Tattoos.

I’m guessing the announcement was designed for the purpose of dominating the news cycle for a day or two.

It’s been shut down for quite a while. I had expected some developer to tear the old prison down and start a few clusters of condos, the way it happened when the Navy sold Treasure Island to a real estate company. The best waterfront views that money could buy, at least in this area.

**Mildly Off Topic; (Live) Birds I have seen near the Bay Area Waters.
Seagulls, Hawks, Crows, Owls, Woodpeckers, Bluebirds, Hummingbirds, Terns, Egrets, Storks, Pelicans, Albatross and of course nature’s most efficient polluter, the humble Canada Geese are seen here.
