Russia reeling as £38m fighter jet shot down by Ukrainian sea drone in world first

An unmanned Ukrainian sea drone shot down a Russian SU-30 fighter jet near the port of Novorossiysk - home to the Kremlin's Black Sea Fleet. The downing of the £38 million jet was carried out by Group 13 on May 2, a special unit within Ukraine's military intelligence.

The sea drone was reported to be equipped with a R-73 air-to-air missile, which struck the jet in midair. The SU-30 crashed into the sea. Reports suggest that the crew were able to eject from the stricken jet and were later picked up by a civilian cargo ship.

In a statement confirming the plane's shooting down, Ukraine's military intelligence said: "This is the world's first destruction of a combat aircraft by a naval drone."

Ukraine has previously shot down two Russian Mi-8 helicopters using Magura V5 drones on December 31, 2024.

The Sukhoi Su-30 is a twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather, long-range, multirole fighter jet.

It's designed for air superiority, air-to-ground, and air-to-sea operations.

Key characteristics include powerful engines, a large payload capacity, and advanced avionics for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

“Perhaps Putin is preparing to fight a future war using Ukraine as the training ground?”

With the Soviets, I would think that for several reasons to take over Western Europe (spread ideology, get rid of a beacon to the Soviet people, feed their people, provide western goods for their people, etc.).
But, today, everything is reversed (the only ideology is from the West, and it’s Fascism, plenty of food in Russia, and plenty of Western-type goods in Russia, from China), and so I cannot think of a SINGLE REASON why Putin would want to take over the Immigrant/Greta/Groomer/Barren s-hole that still calls itself Europe. Why the hell would he want anything to do with that BASKET CASE? At least during the Cold War, we in the West had one decent, but relatively small, reason to try to take over the Soviet Union and that was their oil. I cannot think of a single reason for the Russians to want to want to take over Europe, where he knows he’d be hated (again) - makes much more sense to deal with China and the Third World for them.

“Ukraine designed and built most of the USSR’s weapons and supplied the fuel for its ICBMs, including the Satan I”

I don’t know about ‘most’, but plenty. Too bad those guys are almost all retired or dead and their factories destroyed, at this point.

Neither the European nations or the civilians that make the donations are “globalists” which is a weasel word used to destroy conversations.

I don’t seeing Russia coveting Western Europe either, but some expansionism could still be on the table for them based on resource related issues, perceived vulnerabilities, and general desire for dominance where feasible. They have an intense interest in the Arctic as you may know.

To my understanding, currently they’re video based with a human controller steering them to target.

With AI, they could remove that element, so long as nothing goes wrong ;p

...somebody is going to do that though, inevitable.

So far the Ukraine factories under the Caucasus have not seen a Russian bomber dropping bunker busters and will never have that unfortunate experience; as for the personnel, the factories were producing and designing Russian weapons right up to the 2014 invasion - so they are still alive and training new people.

Some of the drone swarm air versions have been used. They may have been withdrawn but they were uses several months ago.

You lost 2 fighter jets last night, not just one. LOL!

Also, hundreds of Ukrainian drones are on their way to Eastern Crimea right now. You’ll probably be able to hear the drone show tonight from Kazan, Tatarstan.

BobL said "Thanks for the LAUGH this morning!!!"

According to various sources the number of Russian airframes lost range from 105 (Oryx, Dutch open-source intelligence project) to 672 (Ukraine). U.S. General Christopher Cavoli (former NATO Commander) stated that Russia had lost approximately 10% of it's airframes. Assuming he meant of all types across the entire Russian Air Force and using 2022 numbers that's about 426 aircraft. I'd venture the number is pretty close to what Gen. Cavoli stated; probably a little lower.
