It just seems the network sports themes were so much better in the past.....60s, 70s, 80s. All sports, NBA, NFL, Tennis, Golf.....Or maybe I'm just getting old. Great theme I remember well. NBA on CBS circa 1970. Catchy tune.

We must have seen that ski jumper wipe at the jump on Wide World of Sports 800 times ... But I never thought of a music theme to the image.

I think I recognize Jerry West, Left hander Dave Cowens, and Pistol Pete Maravich. At the 27 28 second mark....that’s pistol pete driving to the whoop....I think.

Also kudos to CBS for ELO’s “Fire On High” for CBS Sports Spectacular.

This one isn't even close. The best sports theme song of all time was "Gathering Crowds," which was used for the closing credits of This Week in Baseball in the 1980s:

The Gillette “Cavalcade of Sports” song (it turned into the advertising song for Gillette. The song preceded the Friday Night Fights.

ABC Wide World of Sports. I liked ABC’s golf music in the 70s. It was Barry White and “Love Theme” as they showed the beautiful course like Pebble Beach......

Here’s another good one I think. ABC NBA theme 1971....”Time out for the NBA game of the week”

I remember it like yesterday:

I really liked the full version.

This Week In Baseball I watched a fair amount of back then.

Somewhere in the late 80s I stopped caring about sports.

NFL Today on CBS. 1976.

Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, Jimmy the Greek, and a touch of Phyllis George.

A lot of them sound like they were meant for something else. For example, LNBC's Sunday Night Football theme reminds many listeners of something from Star Wars. John Williams wrote it, so there might be that

I thinkn in a way, that’s what made them great. CBS would play disco at breaks and lead ins during the 70s NFL games. It just went with it as Pat Summeral announced the score and said “we’ll be right back”....with the Heaven must be missing an Angel in the background....great days.
