A phenomenon that Elon Musk has called 'the greatest risk to the future of civilization' just got worse, according to a new study.
Musk - who has 14 children with four women - has for years warned about population collapse caused by baby bust in America and the West.
The consensus was that countries needed a fertility rate of 2.1 children per one woman to continue growing - a concern given that the US's is at 1.62.
But now researchers say that fertility target may be too low.
A new study found populations may need a fertility rate of 2.7 children per woman to avoid long-term extinction.
The team said the original estimate didn't fully account for variables like mortality rates, the male-to-female ratio, the probability that some adults never reproduce, and random fluctuations in family size.
Musk, who boasts of 'always banging the baby drum,' has been sounding the alarm on worldwide population collapse for years, claiming it will be 'the biggest problem the world will face in 20 years.'
The billionaire-turned-politician previously said that low birth rates result in fewer workers, increased debt, strained healthcare and pension systems, and total social unrest.
Diane Cuaresma, one of the study's authors, said: 'Considering stochasticity [unpredictability] in fertility and mortality rates, and sex ratios, a fertility rate higher than the standard replacement level is necessary to ensure sustainability of our population.'
The team concluded that true population sustainability – as well as the sustainability of languages, cultural traditions, and diverse family lineages – requires rethinking conventional fertility targets.
Writing in the journal Plos One the team said: 'The underpopulation crisis has been a serious threat to the sustainability of developed countries.

America is overcrowded. The roads are overcrowded. The cities are overcrowded. Farmland is constantly encroached on for new suburbs. Enough. Seal the border even for ‘legal’ immigration. Kick out the illegals.

Mark Steyn wrote a great book titled "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It" nearly 20 years ago on this topic. Many of his predictions have / are coming true. He posited the ennui and hedonism in Western Europe resulting from two devastating world ward 1) killed off a lot of young men and 2) made people want to live for today, not for a family tomorrow, and 3) Islam will take over via Immigration Jihad.
He believed "America can survive, prosper, and defend its freedom only if it continues to believe in itself, in the sturdier virtues of self-reliance (not government), in the centrality of family, and in the conviction that our country really is the world's last best hope. " I think we are not doing well on any of those metrics.
Steyn should have added "If America has strict immigration control and only admit people who will assimilate, believe in the American Dream, learn English and contribute to our success." Biden demolished all of that.

Not everyone wants or is even able to raise a LOT of children well. And the LAST thing this nation needs is more useless people!
That's a fact. The first sheriff in our county from the 1830's has 5 children buried next to him and none made it to the age of 4. Cholera was a big deal back then. Probably were drinking right out of the rivers around here.

Farmers needed children for labor.
Poor, new, LEGAL immigrants needed them to work and help out the family finances.
And LEGAL contraception was was rare to NOT AVAILABLE AT ALL!
I don’t think it needs TFR~2.7 to maintain sustainability. The 2.1 came from net reproduction rate equals to one. That is, by calculating how many girls a women needed so they can produce next generation that has similar number as current population. The number is two plus additional 0.1 to accommodate tnose who didn’t marry.
TFR = 2.7 will simply lead faster population growth.
Why? To keep funding an expanding government, more welfare and company profits from expanding populations?
Canada is already giving their elderly a hard time.
We have a shortage of Elon's. 😋
