Actually, whenI was five, my family was having Sunday dinner at our neighbor’s house. My dad didn’t believe in making kids sit at the table until the adults were finished, so I was in the living room listening to the radio and reading a book. My dad taught me how to read when I was four, could read adult novels when I was 5.
I heard the news that we were at war and ran into the dining room to tell the adults.
The next day every man in America was at the draft board signing up. My dad had a heart murmur, so they rejected him. He became a “Dollar a Year Man”., those with certain necessary skills if we were invaded. My dad had restaurants all over NYC then, so knew how to feed a lot of people if we were invaded.
