Things have gone so well all spring for Journalism that the sometimes nerve-wracking event that is the Kentucky Derby post-position draw didn’t weigh heavily on his trainer, Michael McCarthy.
But Journalism did fare extremely well, drawing post 8 in a field of 21 entered Saturday for the $5 million Kentucky Derby to be run May 3 at Churchill Downs. A stalking-type runner, Journalism did draw outside most of the expected speed in the race with the exception of East Avenue, who drew post 12.
“I have so much confidence in this horse I probably would have been happy with wherever he drew,” McCarthy said afterward. “But there’s plenty of speed inside of us. My horse is very tactical, he’s fast enough in his own right. He’ll bounce out of there, and I’m sure he’ll find himself in a very comfortable spot.”
Journalism, who has won four straight races including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, was installed as the 5-2 Derby favorite by Daily Racing Form’s David Aragona. He was made the 3-1 morning-line favorite by Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia.

I would prefer the winner was not named “Journalism”.
Regardless, my mint juleps reign supreme.
It’s been half a century.
Will another freak like Secretariat ever be born?
Run fast and turn left: that sounds like Journalism’s forte.
Heart and lungs of Secretariat were a third larger than average thoroughbreds. Freak is right.
What idiot names a horse journalism?
The story is the owners wanted an “ism” name. Why, who knows? At least they didn’t go fascism or communism or racism.
I think I’ll find it impossible to root for a horse named “Journalism” since I have so little respect for most “journalists”. Tagline is still accurate.
JUSTIFY came close.
So were Sham's! Any year other than 1973...
Crying shame, really.
