A DAY OF MOURNING FOR PRESIDENT LINCOLN.
[OFFICIAL]
By the President of the United States of America
A PROCLAMATION.
Whereas, by my direction, the Acting Secretary of State, in a notice to the public on the 17th of April, requested the various religious denominations to assemble on the 19th of April on the occasion of the obsequies of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, late President of the United States, and to observe the same with appropriate ceremonies; and whereas, our country has become one great house of mourning, where the head of the family has been taken away, and believing that a special period should be assigned for again humbling ourselves before Almighty God, in order that the bereavement may be sanctified to the nation; now, therefore, in order to mitigate that grief on earth which can only be assuaged by communion with the Father in Heaven, and in compliance with the wishes of Senators and Representatives in Congress, communicated to me by a resolution adopted at the national capital, I, ANDREW JOHNSON, President of the United States, do hereby appoint Thursday, the 25th day of May next, to be observed wherever in the United States the flag of the country may be respected, as a day of humiliation and mourning, and I recommend my fellow-citizens then to assemble in their respective places of worship, there to unite in solemn service to Almighty God in memory of the good man who has been removed,

I did not know of Canada’s involvement with Lincoln’s death.
I guess they had to go to plan where no one would expect.
Fun thing about reading old newspapers is that you realize they were no better than the mainstream lackies of today. If they didn’t know, they’d just print what they heard.
Plus, they were as politically biased as any media we have today.
"Modern man is staggering and losing his balance because he is being pelted with little pieces of alleged fact which are native to the newspapers; and, if they turn out not to be facts, that is still more native to newspapers." - G.K. Chesterton
That’s it, put the Canadian tariff at 125 percent.
Kinda like Christopher Steel, John McCain and Tim Kaine meeting up at that security conference in Halifax in 2016...?
Now I really hate Canada .
they printed every narrative Stanton leaked to the through and after the war- including the murder of Lincoln. Someone should write a book. Someone has in re: the intertwining timelines of 1.)escape of the CSA govt. by train with the treasury funds/bullion on a separate train 2.) the conspiracy of the murderer of Lincoln and the attempts on the 2 Non-Radical members of his cabinet- Seward and VP Johnson and 3) the ghastly railroad train “memorial” trip of Lincolns poorly embalmed body back to Illinois- a sick worship creation. Fact is, the Radicals did not want what they knew would be Lincoln’s merciful Reconstruction plans- which did not include a decade plus of Union army governors and occupying troops- to enable theft of property and utter corruption therein. Stanton kept Booth’s diary (pages torn out, which were there when the CO gave the diary to Stanton) and withheld it from the Tribunal, to be later discovered years later in Stanton’s safe after his death. Gen Lew Wallace- later author of Ben Hur presided over the Tribunal.
The book among many well written- By James L. Swanson

Incidentally- James Swanson, just died April 21,2025 this past Monday. A shame— quite honest history writer. Bloody Crimes imho one of his best.
“The American press is a shame and a reproach to a civilized people. When a man is too lazy to work and too cowardly to steal, he becomes an editor and manufactures public opinion.”
― William T. Sherman
