Microsoft Edge: AI is taking over the New Tab Page
Ghacks Net ^ | Apr 22, 2025 | Martin Brinkmann

"How can I help you today". That is what you see when you open Microsoft Edge's new tab page in the latest development version. Microsoft is replacing the traditional new tab page with a page that is all about Copilot. It is the second Copilot feature that has been added to Edge recently by Microsoft.

Currently, that is only an experiment, but there is a chance that this new AI-powered page is replacing the classic new tab page, at least as an option.

Snip....

Many of the interactions with Copilot redirect you to the Bing website where the results are shown. Pretty much anything that I typed was redirected to Bing. Any request to interact with the open tabs was ignored. It is possible that this is still in development and that interactions with tabs come at a later point in time.

Simple solution; don’t use Edge.

Until they lock out all other browser options... Looks like they are working towards total dependency on MS products.

There are some things that really want to use Edge. Ditto Chrome. But most browsing gets done on Brave, for me. But all of them are available to me.

Never. I’ve been using Opera for about 20 years, https://www.opera.com/

Opera is the only browser I will use on my phone. It’s especially good for a text-intensive site like FR.

Copilot and Edge are removed on my laptop... and a lot of MS is disabled with drivers removed as well.

China owns opera. They bought it a few years ago.

Speaking of Chrome... Looks like the government is going to make Google sell off chrome. OpenAI is looking to buy it. This is jumping out of the skillet into the fire...

OpenAI is interested in buying Chrome from Google.

I have no idea what the old Tab Page did.

Regardless, the AI on Microsoft Bing is outstanding.

You ask a question, Bing gives you an excellent summary, plus helpful links.

Google summaries are less helpful, and their top links have ad bloat.

“China owns opera. They bought it a few years ago.”

I have been searching for a real solution for both the insecure Browser/Search Engine issues for several years now. Have yet to find any that are truly secure, even Brave. They are all collecting private data themselves and reselling it even if they claim it is private. I have come to the realization that someone is going to have to completely start from scratch with new unique base engines for both to actually prevent it.

First time every day when I log into a PC at work, it tries to set up CoPilot. 30 seconds later, I get to close it. Screen saver has the stock tips, news, shopping widgets, weather etc.

Last place I worked I figured out how to get rid of all the junk but the PCs in this new place are used my multiple people so I can’t personalize them. I use 3 PCs on a regular basis depending on where in the shop I am. They are set up however IT/admin sets them up.

They have a support/help desk system so I guess I’ll let them know about the CoPilot thing because that’s just wasting 30 seconds a day for every user.

I still won’t be using Chrome for casual browsing.

I went on a serious de-Googling spree after the James Damore incident. That has been almost 8 years ago now.

I don’t like Reddit because of their politics, but they are useful for some things. Here is one of them:

I have tried co-pilot more than a few times and it mostly lame to useless. I use Grok3 and Perplexity. I should check out Gemini, though its just the newest way for goog scum to snag more data for your dossier / profile.

>Google . . . top links have ad bloat

That has been the case for more than a decade. It is why it was so easy for me to kick them to the curb for the James Damore incident 8 years ago.

I have been looking into memory (hogging) usage. Chrome is best when used with “Tab Suspender” extension. The best over Edge and Brave. On all three I use Bing as search engine.

Here is how to restart Chrome to dump and renew memory usage. Type this into address bar, then press Enter >>>> chrome://restart

Yep, that is a fact... Just figure on the purpose of all IA is exactly that.
