All federal and state flags will be displayed at half-staff this week in a show of respect for the recent passing of Pope Francis.

If it were up to me, the US flag would fly at half-mast on Memorial Day. And that’s about it.
They’re only “Half Mast” on ships... They are “Half Staff” because Trump ordered it based on the Pope’s death (which I disagree with).
Are we a Catholic nation?
I guess so. Why aren’t we flying the Vatican flag?
I’m thinking the president did this out of respect. There’s nothing really wrong with that, even though I disagreed with the Pope wholeheartedly.
The pope is on the same level as Whitney Houston ?
In addition to being head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope is also the head of state for the Vatican State.
Crazy talk!
Houston had way more vocal range than Frank!
Pope Francis was consistently hostile to President Trump. The only thing that could have made it worse was if Trump had come out in favor of the Traditional Latin Mass. I was surprised that the pope was friendly to Vance on Sunday, in fact that he even agreed to meet him. When Pompeo was Secretary of State and in Rome, the pope refused to meet with him.
“ The pope is on the same level as Whitney Houston ?”

You may both be correct, but Carrie Underwood is better than both of them.
But Carrie underwood isn’t running for Pope. I don’t think?
The Pope is not American.
Right. With 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide and 72 million in the US, it’s wise for Trump to support them, in spite of Deep Stater Francis.
I am exactly of the same mindset.
I despise this putting flags at half-mast for every Tom, Dick and Harry. Never for a member of Congress. And I didn’t do it for Carter, not even “out of respect for the office”.
And not for a Marxist Pope.
As a Navy Dependent and former Navy myself, my flagpole is ALWAYS a mast!
I understand the distinction, but I have no control over what landlubbers say! (only kidding!)
One AF base commander shut down the base and had a memorial service for a guard dog.
Yup, Memorial Day should cover most things.
Great question, after all, we do follow other Vatican symbolism.
Washington DC and the Vatican (the third from City of London completes the trilogy):
Linked by this symbolism:
Same here! He took the Catholic church in the wrong direction, but I am glad that President Trump is showing him respect on his passing.
Does the U.S. fly its flags at half staff for any other religious leader? I do not remember any other religious leader given that honor.
When Obama was the pResident, the flag was at half mast almost perpetually.
Using it like that is endorsing a state of continuous weakness and victimhood.
When we had those terrible casualties at Tarawa, which had been formerly not seen in the war, we didn’t put the flag at half mast then.
Per AI
The U.S. flag has been flown at half-staff for only a few foreign leaders, making it a rare honor. Notable foreign leaders who have received this tribute include:

• Pope John Paul II (2005)
• Nelson Mandela (South African President, 2013)
• Yitzhak Rabin (Israeli Prime Minister, 1995)
• King Hussein of Jordan (1999)
• Shimon Peres (Israeli President, 2016)
• Queen Elizabeth II (UK Monarch, 2022)
• Pope Francis (2025)
