Chinese airlines have begun returning Boeing aircraft to the U.S., with one 737 Max recently landing back at a Boeing production hub in Seattle over the weekend, according to Reuters.
Saturday’s return occurred shortly after China ordered its airlines not to take further deliveries of Boeing aircraft in response to the U.S. imposing 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, Bloomberg News reported last week.
A trio of 737 Max 8 jets that were originally being readied at Boeing’s Zhoushan delivery center for two Chinese airlines were recalled to the U.S. last week, according to aviation news service The Air Current, citing two people familiar with Boeing’s plans.
Reuters confirmed over the weekend that a witness saw a Boeing jet intended for China’s Xiamen Airlines landing back at the planemaker’s production hub in Seattle. The aircraft, which was painted with Xiamen livery, was one of the several 737 Max jets waiting at the Zhoushan completion center for final work and delivery to the Chinese carrier.
Fox News Digital reached out to Boeing and Xiamen Airlines for comment, but they did not immediately respond.
Lin Jian, the chief spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a press conference on April 16 that he was "not familiar with" China making any formal announcement telling its airlines to refuse delivery from Boeing.
The Air Current said China’s order to halt Boeing deliveries has also affected domestic business. A Chinese aircraft lessor saw another Chinese airline back away from its commitment to take delivery, forcing the lessor to remarket the already-built 737 Max 8 to other airlines, the outlet reported, citing two people familiar with the development.
Analysts also said airline CEOs may rather defer plane deliveries than pay duties, according to Reuters, which could potentially damage Chinese airline operations.

Their domestic jet that “competes” with the B737 and A320 is horribly overweight, and China cannot make a competitive turbofan engine. They have to buy engines from the EU or US. Plus, their jet is not certified to fly into Europe or the US. They are just trying to make shock headlines.
And don’t forget that if you order an A320 today, you might get it somewhere between 2030 and 2035. (Like Boeing, Airbus has a backlog of many thousands of jets) Any airline that cancels their B737 orders from years ago are shooting themselves is the foot.
They could have become communist. Back in the end of WWII, the USSR was making moves towards invading Japan, but couldn't until 3 months after the surrender of Germany due to agreements in the Yalta Conference of 1945 with the USA. A couple days before the planned Soviet invasion of Japan, the USA dropped atomic bombs. This was a warning to the Soviets to back off from invading. Although the USSR did then declare war on Japan and attacked in Manchuria, they stopped at the 38th Parallel of Korea and did not invade the main Japanese islands. If not for the atomic bombs, Japan might have been split like Korea ending up in half communist regions.
Serves Boing right for dealing with the chinese commies.
Charge them a 20% restocking fee.
My guess is that Airbus and Boeing have in mind a new generation of blended wing aircraft with new technologies that will not be shared with China. Jet turbine engine technology is especially hard when it comes to producing engines that perform well with long time between overhauls. China has not yet developed and mastered the tricks involved.
I wouldn’t set foot in one.
First thing I thought as well.
Very true.
The exceptions are there is a small minority of Japanese that dont care about quality, and there are a small minority of chinese that do care about quality.
The exceptions prove the rule.
My first flight in an airplane was on a made in Russia plane from Mumbai to Prague. Later on I learned that aircraft model had a few crashes. In Prague we missed the connecting flight to London. Czech airline bussed us to a good hotel for the night, a generous free breakfast was served, then we received a free bus tour to visit Lidice (where German military killed all males in village for revenge of assassination of a German officer). Then we arrived in London Heathrow airport where I had several hours layover to board Pan Am flight to NY city. I was told since my travel agent had not confirmed my flight, my seat was sold to others. My cousin studying in London came to airport to meet me. I was 20 year old student and had registration coming up fast in Iowa city. I was in tears for fear of missing registration date. Pan Am desk told me to check just before departure time if there were any no shows. When all passengers had boarded, they asked me to board the plane. There was one seat open in First Class, and I was ushered there. My seat mate encouraged me to try the free drinks. I never had a drink before. Arrived in New York airport feeling wasted. I was tired from 24 hour journey from Mumbai to New York. So I opted for greyhound bus journey to Iowa City. This was 1960, and the Interstates were not yet built. But I got to see so many towns along the way. My seat mate was an American student so it was good company. He left at Chicago bus stop to catch another bus, and I had a young female seat mate. It was a red eye bus ride to Iowa city arriving in early morning. Amazingly one graduate student was waiting for me at the bus stop to drive me to the dorm.
To this day I am amazed I had arranged all this using snail mail from India, which took 10-15 days for a letter. The university admission, dorm room, meeting cousin in London airport, and someone to give me a ride from bus station to dorm, all done via snail mail. Internet was 30+ years away. Good old days.
“ The Japanese embraced Deming.”
United States manufacturers ignored him which allowed the Japanese companies to eventually overtake us.
Electric powered!
They should be scrapped. Who knows what China planted on them.
The northern most island in the Japanese chain is Sakhalin, the southern 2/5 of which was occupied by the Red Army after the declaration of war in 1945, and Japan ceded the territory in 1951. For additional smaller islands in the Kuril chain are occupied by Russia, but ownership is disputed by Japan.
“Non-nuclear H-bomb”? IMHO, hog wash. My degree is in nuclear engineering. Achieving a nuclear fusion reaction requires overcoming the coulomb repulsion of the atom’s electrons, which takes enormous temperatures and pressures which cannot be achieved without a fissile device used as an initiator for explosions in the kiloton range. The closest that this has been done without a fission device is LLNL’s laser initiated fusion using megawatt output pulse lasers on a fusion fuel target the size of a tiny droplet.
Not the case with Communist China whose sole intention is to steal and dominate
I’d get on a Japanese produced airliner in a nano second, a Communist Chinese one not in my lifetime
Yes— correct! And the result for chi-coms brings to mind the media coverage in San Fran back a while— paraphrasing:
Names of the crew:
Pilot; Sum Ting Wong
Co-Pilot: Wi Tu Lo
Navigator: Ho Li Phuc
Good day and great comment. Those planes will be quickly sold to solid customers— after thorough inspections.
China shoots self in foot— again. Sum Ting Wong
Oh goodie....more used aircraft for Delta Airlines to buy.
Boeing.
Became too dependent on Chicom. Pushed bad appeasement and support of chicoms for decades.
Woke.
Example of how liberalism destroys once great companies.
