Salaries grow fast for engineering, but have been stagnant for past 15 to 20 years it seems.

H1b and outsourcing to India.
It was started by Intel back in the early 90’s.
In the end it only ended Intel.
The problem was obvious with the head of Intel’s Pentium project.
Vinod Dham was THE person who covered up the Pentium FPU flaw so he could get huge stock options.

Thus began a long line of scam artists who convinced Executive Staff to fund dumb ideas.

My kid is an Astronautical Engineer doing something on the Space Force. Let’s just say he’s wildly overcompensated.

Field Service Engineering (construction yes, but repairs, modifications, servicing and updating, replacing in-process components, and -especially high-paid/high demand - testing and re-certification AFTER an outage or turnaround period - are 140,000.00 to 180,000.00 annually. But require travel, require the long shifts to get that much.

7x12 shifts, 6x10 shifts, 7 x 10 shifts. All out of town at the customer’s sites.

The power plants are screaming for grid and power production engineers - especially electrical and mechanical and controls and I&C.

Correct. Engineering background educations will get you comfortable but to break that ceiling they have to transition into some type of engineering management coupled with project/business development.
