A man shot and killed a grizzly bear Friday after it charged while he was shed hunting near Dupuyer in north-central Montana.
According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the man was searching for antlers on a brushy hillside when he first saw the bear. As he was leaving, the bear charged him at close range and he shot the bruin. The man was not injured.
The adult female grizzly was healthy with no history of conflict. She was estimated to be 13 years old and weighed about 250 pounds.
The sow had a single yearling cub that was found unharmed. No management action will be taken for the yearling.
Dupuyer is along the Rocky Mountain front on the east side of the Great Bear Wilderness area.
Grizzly bears in the lower 48 states are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Management authority for grizzlies rests with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Shed hunter: Someone who looks for antlers that have been shed.
I had to look it up. ;-P
Thanks for the clarification.
I should have put it in the remarks. When you work with this stuff all the time, it is easy to forget some terms are esoteric to most people.
The estimated weight is pretty light, even for a female grizzly. Guessing that’s due to a relatively recent conclusion of hibernation & no time for significant feeding, yet. Could be a factor in the attack, too.
At 250 pounds, she’s a small female grizzly……
She is a mountain grizzly, and it is spring. She would probably weigh in at 400 lbs in the fall.
Thanks, I was wondering too!
Joe Biden killed Gentle Ben with his bear hands.
For those who know: is that yearling Cub going to survive?
Cub should have learned something to survive during it’s first year.
Shed Elk Antlers are worth a lot of money.
The really good quality end up in chandeliers in billionaires vacation homes in Jackson Hole.
The lower quality end up as expensive dog chews like the piece my wife’s four pound Chihuahua is growling about right now at the other end of the couch.
I would guess so. I believe I've read that a grizzly sow will run off yearling cubs if newborn cubs are around.

Believe it or not, hunting for antlers is a state regulated event......
250lbs? No grizz I’ve ever seen.
At only 250 pounds... She is a very hungry female grizzly who just emerged from hibernation.
Been thru there.. a lot of open range land
I was shed hunting a while ago. Settled for one at an Amish manufacturer right up the road. Nice roll up garage door and all on it.
