Amid the escalating US-China trade war, a report in the Glitz says China may give free rein to counterfeiters, particularly those which target luxury brands in America, in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs. Amid this, TikTok is flooded with videos that show how luxury brands manufacture their products in China.
Trump has imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, and in its own tit-for-tat tariffs, the Xi Jinping government imposed 125% tariffs. China has now urged Washington to “completely cancel” what it calls the unfair practice of reciprocal tariffs...
In the video, a man, while showing several bags that resemble luxury brands’ styles, says, “For more than the last 30 years, we have been the OEM factory for most of the luxury brands from around the world. You name it…. But for this, I am not proud because we were only making our wages, and the profit margin for those who are actually making the bags is very low….”

And tablets and smart watches.

ALL VALID REASONS TO REMOVE CHINESE OWNERSHIP OF AMERICAN LAND
100% trade embargo on China. Let them eat their cheap knockoffs.
Purses are the silliest buys new right now. LV’s, Gucci, Burberry, etc. You are right, the older stuff that’s vintage is much better.
I’ve been seeing more small outfits making things like custom purses in the US that are as good or better than the Chinese crap.
They could have revealed this years ago.
What the Chinese are well known for, is MAKING CHEAP COPIES and selling them all over the streets of NYC; fake Rolexes, all kinds of purses, and yes, even pirated DVDs.
Are most of the top end brand purses worth the price? For most of them, no, not really. And for the most part, men and women who wear a lot of things with the brand names all over them, it's NEW MONEY showing off.
--------------------
Until the batteries run out - which always seems to happen at the worst possible time.
Have an Omega Seamaster that I have worn pretty much every day for the last several decades.
It has led a very hard and active life all over the world.
It has spent a lot of time under the water, on the water , in the air, in the gym , on my arm running and working in the field working under really harsh, high vibration and shock conditions.
It has taken a real beating and it's still in great condition. I have rarely had to wind it.
On the other hand I seem to go through several iPhones a year with periodic and very expensive screen replacements.
Tried an iWatch on my other arm because everyone said I should and it lasted about three months. I'm looking forward to seeing if I have better luck with the new Tesla but my Omega is off to the factory for major overhaul .
Not only do I plan on keeping it, I plan on being buried with it unless my son wants it bad enough.
I wear a wristwatch because I don’t carry a phone everywhere. For about $20 I can get a Casio or a Timex that will last at least a few years. Before I retired I’d usually break them by then, but my current watch has actually lasted long enough to need its battery replaced.
They’ve been doing it for decades. They run 24/7. 16 hours they make the branded goods the other 8 hour shift they run either counterfeits or off brand but the same quality. My buddy got a brand new set of Galloway golf clubs right from the factory for 1/8th the price. Exactly the same as the Calloway at the time, but with a different nameplate. Harder to do with say Louis Vuitton since their logo is unique but just the same design, leather, engineering etc for all kinds of goods from purses to dresses to suits and shirts etc. It’s just a label that changes. Now it seems they will go back to straight counterfeiting. I am looking forward to getting some new “Rolex” watches and maybe some “Hugo Boss” suits. Time to upgrade my image and besides those aren’t American brands anyway. I’m just kidding of course.
It used to just be a civil crime to counterfeit private goods. The company had to sue each maker and show losses. Thats why there were so many fakes in the 1980s. I knew another guy who made the best counterfeit LV purses and bags etc. They were indistinguishable from the real and he made good money because almost nobody could tell they were fake. He and his wife made millions they were smart about it too, sold them in bulk at wholesale where they ended up in shops around the country. This was of your swap meet cheap stuff. He caught the company’s attention for good though because he made a product they did not make - something intended for illegal nose drug consumption. Thats when they really went after him. I still have one of his briefcases but I never use it. Too pretentious. I wish I had one of those nose candy kits though, just for posterity I would not use the drug. Anyway now it is a criminal offense to make or sell counterfeits. The corporations got the government to prosecute their counterfeiter for them. Cheaper for them they pass enforcement off to the taxpayers. Since then the quality of most counterfeits has gone way down.
Sometimes they’re not knockoffs. Williams-Sonoma was caught bringing in merchandise from China and tagging it “Made in USA”.
It shouldn’t be surprising some companies do this sort of thing.
Here’s the FTC complaint:

Seiko still makes good watches too. Been around for 100 years. And it’s a conversation starter too. Not worth being robbed for it, but people who notice it recognize the brand name but have likely never seen one.
“The purpose of displaying a luxury brand is to say you have the wherewithal to waste money. This makes you sexually more desirable.”
very true ...
And for the most part, it's only the nouveau riche who but LV, stuff with Gucci all over it, and such.
You are correct, but it’s especially NEW Rolexes that will get the side eye, from those with “old money”; ancient ones, that have been inherited..those are okay and look different.
NOUVEAU RICHE people. They like to show off the fact that they can afford such & such.
No, they aren’t! Some Gen Z boys are actually interested in having nice and/or funny watches and wear and collect them them.
Fake Rolexes have been a thing for years. Guys I know who did contract work in South Korea would bring home several back in the 80s.
Kids all over the place in Singapore selling Rolexes for a couple bucks back in the '70s. A fellow I knew bought one. Ran for about a day.
These imported Chinese “guest workers” returned from Chinese New Year in January 2020 bringing with them COVID-19. That combined with Italy having the second oldest population in the world with many people, vulnerable, frail, and very elderly, led to false scare tactics about the lethality of COVID-19.
