ON BOARD STEAMER "CITY POINT," JAMES RIVER, Va., Wednesday, April 12 via WASHINGTON, D.C., April 13 -- 12:20 P.M.

Lieut.-Gen. GRANT and staff arrived at City Point this morning at half-past four o'clock, having left Appomattox Court-house -- the scene of the surrender of Geo. LEE and his army -- on Tuesday morning at daylight. They came on horseback to Burkesville Station, on the Southside Railroad, and thence by rail to City Point. Appomattox Court-house is one hundred and three miles west of Petersburgh, and only twenty-two miles east of Lynchburgh. Gen. LEE did not arrive with them, but when the details of the surrender are complete, will proceed direct to Richmond.

I am able to lay before you the highly interesting and important details of the surrender, through the courtesy of Col. TAL. P. SHAFFNER, the eminent telegraph engineer, who was an eye-witness to the whole scene.

But in order to give a clear idea of the position where the event took place, and how the respective armies stood at the time, it is necessary to go back and very briefly follow the course of the armies from the time they left Petersburgh. When LEE began his retreat he crossed the Appomattox and moved westwardly with rapidity, while GRANT followed with part of his force directly in LEE's rear; and with the remainder of his infantry and SHERIDAN's cavalry, he struck out parallel with and on both sides of the Southside Railroad, for Burkesville, fifty-three miles west of Petersburgh, where the Danville road crosses the Southside road. By the most herculean efforts, the troops being cheered by the prospect of cutting off the rebel retreat, our forces reached Burkesville first, and the Danville Railroad was no longer available to LEE.
