This will be the 50th running of the Long Beach GP.

The 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit encircles the Long Beach Convention Center -- which houses a Family Fun Zone and numerous displays during the race weekend -- and runs down scenic Shoreline Drive. It offers numerous overtaking opportunities, including Turn 1, getting the hairpin turn just before the frontstretch right is critical.

Sign me up. I first attended the Long Beach Grand Prix back in the mid to late 70s, I think it was Formula 1 at that time. I have probably attended that race 30 to 35 times and it was always a great experience. Heh, I was even there when they were filming the movie Driven, with Sylvester Stallone and they drove a camera car by telling the crowd to cheer. I think the best races came during the CART era. I’m not a fan of all the tracks they run now, and I certainly don’t know how they call the cars open wheel any more, but this is the only series I still make an attempt to follow.

I attended the first F-race in Long Beach, in the mid-to-late 70s. Seems to me that first race wasn’t actually “F1” but rather a smaller F-car.

My viewing experience at that race put me off, because we saw so little actual action. Haven’t attended another race since, inasmuch as television coverage is so much more comprehensive.

I lived in South LA in the 80’s and repaired computers on site. LBGP was a huge event, in a city where it takes a huge event to even be noticed. Many fans arrived by boat. I’m on call during the event in 1986 and got a call from the Hyatt Long Beach. Hard drive with the removeable 11 platter disc pack crashed. At the time, the course went through the Hyatt garage. I parked close and hiked ~3 miles in. No cell phones, so it took forever to talk my way in and get security access. Fortunately, had all the parts I needed and a 30 pound oscilloscope. I got the Hotel back online before the checker flag and checkouts started.

Who knew then that years later I would retire from IMS/INDYCAR in 2019?
