Now if China Mitch were to repeat this I might believe this BS, but right now it is just Forbes.

“Here’s Why U.S. Manufacturers Can’t Quit China..”

Thats because they aren’t manufacturers, they are importers.

Here’s your author:

“Shimite Obialo graduated from Columbia Law School in 2013 and works as an associate in the Tech Group at Lowenstein Sandler LLP in New York.
-
When not pursuing legal endeavors, Shimite is dedicated to issues of diversity, community development and empowerment, cultural heritage and arts advocacy and currently serves as founder and CEO of ANOKO, a private members club for diverse creatives and professionals.”

Having read all that I suspect a slight bias. 😏

Any biz that can’t set up and produce what they need in the US to avoid 100%+ tariffs probably shouldn’t be in business and will be replaced by other providers. (There is zero need for us to recreate the horror of Shenzhen here!)

i am not saying that US manufacturers have to quit manufacturing in Communist China

I am only saying how nice it will be when they start manufacturing in USA again, too!

we can weigh the resulting balance later

ps: until the do start/restart manufacturing in USA, the article’s title is grossly misleading (they aren’t US Manufacturers if they don’t manufacture in the US!)

The trade deficit with China peaked in 2018, and has since declined 25%

As far as cheap crap goes, Vietnam or Bangladesh are cheaper. As far has high tech goes, American businesses are already very wary of giving China more control.

Trump is now giving the impetus to less trade a further push

China played the long game to get us here. Trump is playing the long game to get us out.

Can anyone in this country think past the next quarter?

Trump’s current maneuvers aside, the US government has been openly hostile to American manufacturing and production for 50 years and has encouraged countries like China (especially China) to pull US mfg over there. Hell, the government drove it over there. A lot of traitors in DC have gotten wealth doing this.

Cost and quality are king where consumer preference wins in the open competition of the voluntary cooperation between buyer and seller in the marketplace.

If you as the buying consumer can get a better quality product and/or a lower price for the same, the consumer doesn’t care where it came from - only the stupid politicians care.

The Free Market Economy (FME) is oblivious to politics. The FME cares only about self interest in the voluntary cooperation between buyer and seller in the marketplace which drives supply and demand which in turn drives price and availability.

Grima Wormtongue.

In 1941 he would have said we've lost most of our Pacific fleet, Hitler controls most of Europe and we should sue for peace while we still can.

This woke shill for globalism and American’tism ends his, “It just can’t be done” screed by praising Biden, his “Inflation Reduction” act, blah blah blah.
I ask you,
Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hell no!
F him and the pony he rode in on.

No way in Hell do I believe that China has been so uniquely blessed resource-wise that despite having 20% of the world’s population on 5% of the land, they have the dominant share of over half of the times of rare resources. If they lead the world in *extraction* of those resources, I presume it’s only because the cheapest method of extraction is extremely environmentally destructive and the Chinese government has such a criminally indifferent attitude towards the survival of its own workforce that other nations simply are unwilling to pile corpses high enough to compete price-wise.

Well, get started NOW, guys. Quit bellyaching, get Congress members to pass laws making schools start teaching need skills or fire all administrators/teachers. Get the infrastructure in place instead of spending billions on perversion and your own kickbacks. Your OWN sins have caused all of this. Confess, repent and START doing what is right for this nation, or...just die.

While Forbes was previously majority-owned by a Hong Kong-based investment group, Integrated Whale Media Investments (IWM), in 2014, it is no longer owned by China. In 2023, Austin Russell, CEO of Luminar Technologies, acquired a majority stake in Forbes, with IWM retaining a minority stake and one board seat.
