President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 90-day pause on the full effect of his new tariffs for at least some countries.
Trump also said in a social media post that he was raising the tariffs imposed on imports from China to 125% “effective immediately” due to the “lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets.”
Trump credited his decision to pause the full effect of tariffs on the fact that “more than 75 Countries” have contacted U.S. officials “to negotiate a solution” to trade concerns that he raised in imposing the new duties.

Information that we can use to leverage just not markets but influence.
Tariffs were a tool. A weapon and Trump is wielding them brilliantly.
I am thinking about getting 100% out of the stock market. It is obviously rigged.
China deserves payback for what they did to us with their ChinaVirus along with their trade policies.
Carrot and the stick. I love it. There was no way countries were going to listen to Trump unless he showed he is serious. Now that they want to negotiate then as a good will gesture, pause them for 90 days. Stock market happy. Debbie Downers lose again.
Trump got what he wanted from the most of the violators, including the EU. Now he pits China against the rest of the world, trade wise.
China can’t exist without the US market. They also do not have the domestic consumption to sustain themselves through a trade war. Vietnam, Taiwan and India, all long-time adversaries to China, will be happy to fill the product and manufacturing void if China decides to play chicken here.
This is what he wanted all along. He got the response needed and he’s now isolated China. At the same time, he’s started a slide in crude which hurts Russia and Iran and could break the former. With China influx and a rare metals agreement with Ukraine in reach, this could very well be the end of China as a world power and send them back to second class status.
He’ll now likely lean on the Fed if inflation shows any signs of falling. Then he needs to address the debt.
Doing this all now alleviates the Dems from taking this issue next year in the mid-terms.
Genius really.
I am sorry you didn’t the collapse of the free market you had hoped for.
You could consider asking the socialists on the D side - they’re always up for centrally planning a collapse of capitalism.
It’s just china breaking chaos for the sake of chaos. Meanwhile, no MAGA legislation has passed in Congress.
I dont know, to me it looks like Trump caved to the pressure..if this was all about China he would have left everyone else alone..now the other countries wont bother negotiating because they think Trump wont go ahead with it
This is classic Trump negotiation 101. Enter the room and turn over the table with a bold “lowball” offer, in this case high tariffs. This forces your negotiating counterpart(s) to reset their expectations about what they will get/deserve, then establish a new deal that is more acceptable to Trump’s perspective. It’s always a gamble, but in a deal with intractable counterparties, you have no choice but to turn over the table.
No, to isolate red China, and they deserve it.
Letting Norfolk Island off the tariff hook, temporarily at least, was certainly a master stroke by POTUS.
"For at least some countries"?
You mean like ALL countries except China???
CNBC sounds like Ilhan Omar with their somebody did something headline.
Only CNBC is protecting China.
CNBC loves that China, don’t they?
So I ask, how do you have a free market with 3rd world country that have standard of living 1/10 of ours and some of them are communists? This makes sense only to a FREE TRAITOR™ like you.
PS: I am free market enthusiast inside the USA. Outside the USA - no way. I am a protectionist all the way; just like George and all the founding fathers.
I'm sorry. You are blind.
I would have done the opposite. I wish he had announced that once a tariff takes effect, it would remain in place for 30 days. All these (now bargaining) companies tried to call Trump's bluff, now, with no consequences.
All you need to do is to look at a tariff table BEFORE this happened vs what these countries are willing to do now.
Tariffs now are NOT like tariffs in the 1920s. The goal was always China, it our biggest deficit partner and with Russia dying slowing in Ukraine, now our sole adversary. China does not exist without the US market.
The Dems are hypocritical - they were always for it before they were against it and even a fool can see they’re just reflexively against anything DJT does.
I’ve been consistent on the matter all of my life.
I’m not the one who needs find all the old Nancy Piglosi and Crazy Bernie clips calling for tariffs.
I was against them 30 years ago, I’m still against them now.
That’s the great thing about consistent principles: You never need to worry about remembering who said what about anything.
Yup, not hard to see, except for a handful of TDS'ers on this thread.
