In the heart of downtown Atlanta, several people witnessed the unthinkable over the weekend.
A dead horse was seen lying on the sidewalk in front of Unity National Bank at Peachtree Street and MLK Jr. Drive.
Jon Birdsong owns the building where the bank is located and reported the incident.
“We called Department of Agriculture, firefighters, police officers and animal control,” Birdsong said.
Authorities responded to the scene and placed a white tarp over the horse.
“They were trying to feed it and do everything they could to give it water,” Birdsong said.
Officers said the horse’s owner reported that the animal suffered a “possible medical emergency” and collapsed on the sidewalk.
“A horse passed away around 12:48 a.m. on Sunday morning due to natural causes,” Birdsong said.
Birdsong said the horse was privately owned and did not belong to a carriage company. As for why the owner was riding the horse downtown, it’s unclear.

‘mare’ of Atlanta?
I remember years ago there was a news story about a dead gorilla being found on the streets of NYC. No one had a clue about where it came from until it was revealed that it had died at a zoo and was being transported to a hot dog maker (not id’d). I think about that every time I have a hot dog or piece of sausage.
Not Carl!
Coral!
Maybe it was going to the gorilla glue factory
What is your mane objection?
The question i, how did that ghettopotamus get up on the poor horse?
And did she beat it?
You know beating a dead horse.....ok you had to be there!
Used to be a pretty common sight in every city.
This one, though, this one had the goods on Hillary...
It was purchased ten days before in Tennessee. It is legal to ride in Atlanta, but not too smart, IMHO. Hope not too much suffering ...
Planning a ride-by?
If he was riding it 10 days from Tennessee, I think I see the problem.
Of course, in those days, probably 2 of the 9 kids in that picture would not make it to adulthood.
No reason to believe it was ridden to new home.
