Trump stands by far-reaching tariffs, calling them ‘beautiful thing to behold’ as stock futures plummet

President Trump stood by his wide-scale tariffs, calling them a “beautiful thing to behold” that will eventually be largely supported even as the stock futures dropped Sunday evening.

“They are already in effect, and a beautiful thing to behold. The Surplus with these Countries has grown during the ‘Presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump blasted out on Truth Social Sunday night as he attempted to justify the action he took against around 90 nations last week.

“We are going to reverse it, and reverse it QUICKLY. Some day people will realize that Tariffs, for the United States of America, are a very beautiful thing!”

The president said the leaders of several countries are calling him and are ready to make a deal with the US while speaking to reporters on Air Force One Sunday evening.

“I spoke to a lot of leaders — European, Asian, from all over the world. They’re dying to make a deal,” Trump, 78, said.

“But I said we’re not gonna have deficits with your country. We’re not gonna do that because to me a deficit is a loss. We’re gonna have surpluses or we’re at worst gonna be breaking even.”

Despite the commander-in-chief’s optimism, investors weren’t convinced.

Stock futures dropped Sunday evening with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.1% and the S&P 500 plummeting about 2.5% while the Nasdaq fell almost 3.1%.

Asian shares also sharply fell, with Tokyo’s 225 index losing about 8% when the market opened and down 6% by midday. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 9.4% and the Shanghai Composite index lost 6.2%.

… so they more than a snowball's chance in the mid-terms (as you seem to be arguing for).

I’m not arguing for that. I’m a big fan of “make the choice, own the choice” and “the buck stops here”.

If people don’t believe they are better off financially there’s apt to be changes in Congress.

I cannot agree that the debt will never be repaid, because that will simply cause that can to be kicked down the road.

All debts are paid. There may be circumstances where that debt will not be repaid in the traditional fashion, but if they end up being paid in blood, territory, or national insolvency, that debt will be paid.

We are already in danger of losing our status as the world’s reserve currency, the ramifications of that being catastrophic for the United States for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the current ability to sell our debt to nations still willing to buy it at favorable rates.

What is important is that we address the debt, in the same way someone who has a loan makes the attempt to pay. We can show we are addressing it by trying to grow our way out of it by building an industrial base. That buys us time. Then there is a chance.

That is why we are in a fight.

On the Right, we are in a fight to establish that the economy is better and more solid, more people are working valid jobs, you don’t have to pay $9 for a dozen eggs, and energy costs for people go down.

On the Left, they are trying to destroy the economy because that is the only way they will win.

Wall Street isn’t the economy. Jobs and prices are the economy.

I believe Trump’s policies are going to win on the goals of the Right as described above, and I believe the Left is going to lose because they are agitating for our national demise in order that the grifting, corrupt bastards get back into power.

The dems just don’t care as long as the waste and fraud continue. They are similar to pigs feeding at the trough. The far left biased judges that keep trying to stop Pres. Trump should be jailed for treason. Pres. Trump and his admin could work a lot faster if they didn’t have to be restrained by a bunch of quacks. Once the oil and gas start flowing again the economy will get a boost and manufacturing will come back. Investors are already making deals to build factories here. The current state of the stock market is all about fear. Assholes need to look long term. They didn’t for years, it was always short term. Well look at the mess we’re in now. Patience people. We’ve been through worse. Biden took 4 years to screw everything up, Pres. Trump and his admin need some time to undo 4 years of damage.

The Republican message is subtly changing. Our economic problems are no longer due to socialism, environmental extremism, bad public schools, and labor force DEI — the blame is shifting away from our left and onto foreigners.

Well said. I see we are simpatico on this.

We are at war for the survival of our nation. If we fail, it will turn into a kinetic war.

And nobody wants that, even the people who think right now they do.

I’m not a Church goer, but I’m far from an atheist. Something, a God, a Spirit, an Angel or just dumb luck saved Pres. Trump’s life, and more than once. I’m not so much in favor of dumb luck. There’s a reason he was saved, I just think there has to be. He is doing exactly what he said he was going to do and he never said it would be easy. He did say quickly, but bent judges are trying to throw an anchor on him. I think we will have a roller coaster ride for a while economy wise until deals are made to cut the tariffs with most countries. Then we’ll see a turnaround like never before. Gotta believe my freeper friend.
