Grown-ups are buying more toys than preschoolers — to the tune of $1 billion

Bob Friedland’s home in Little Falls, NJ, is filled with Lego. Lego flowers adorn his dining room table. A Lego reproduction of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” hangs in his office. He has 10 Lego city skylines scattered throughout his abode (one for every town he’s visited). On Halloween, he strings lights on his Lego “Nightmare Before Christmas” set and displays it at the bay window at the front of his house.

“I had to move out of my condo and into a house to find a place to put them all,” Friedland, 50, told The Post.

Friedland has worked in the toy industry as a marketer for decades, but he only began seriously playing with Lego in 2020.

Like many adults stuck at home during the Coronavirus pandemic that spring, Friedland found himself alone and anxious. He remembered how playing with the snappable plastic building blocks had brought him joy as a child. So he bought a 1,000-piece Lego “Voltron” set — based on the 1980s cartoon. And then bought another, and another. He’s completed at least 50 sets since, re-creating everything from a bonsai plant to the set of Jerry’s apartment on “Seinfeld.”

“They’re a stress reliever,” Friedland said. “They don’t fall apart, you can put them on a shelf and look at them and they give you fun, good memories.”

Friedland isn’t the only grown-up embracing their inner child. What started as a pandemic pastime has exploded into a phenomenon, with companies such as MGA Entertainment, Hasbro and Lego pumping out products targeted to these so-called “kidults”: miniature fake food, limited-edition Formula 1 figurines and intricate building sets.

This hoppy started when I brought my first 22 at 12.

Grown-ups have more money than preschoolers.

Well of course they do. The real problem is our society has aborted and contracepted millions of unborn children who would have played with toys bought by their parents. Consequently, toy companies now market toys to other "markets" to help offset declining sales. There's a reason Toys-R-Us went out of business.

Well, I just came up from the Grandpa space in the basement, where I spent the last hour working on a 1/24 scale model car. And there are 6 more boxes on a shelf that I will be working on after I finish this one. Does that count?

Since I can't draw worth a darn, or sing or play a musical instrument, I took up building jigsaw picture puzzles a few years ago, and when that got repetitive, I did a 1/72 scale P51-D my son left behind. One thing led to another and now I have a few hundred dollars worth of model car kits, paint and other supplies.

We are in northern Illinois and when the weather FINALLY gets better, I will be out walking for a few hours each day. The alternative is trying to watch the various TV shows my wife watches all day long when the grandkids aren't over.

Maybe a transition to intraspecies relationships?

(And no, I can’t understand it at all!)

Miss the days when I could get a plastic u-assemble model of a fighter jet at any drugstore with a decent selection...now those models are scarce unless at specialized hobby stores or online...but Walmart has a ton of those crummy lo-res Lego models...
My favorite was a B-58 Hustler painted shiny silver...

This is a non-issue, if you’re an unattached male who has no responsibility. Society is not requiring anything from you, so you are free to create your happy life.

No doubt. $100 lego set, or $80K truck to haul a $75K bass boat….I know which one today’s wages will allow without getting into a crushing debt.

The new Autism cases are almost all adult women. Their toy of choice: Squishmallows
They are also more likely to identify as LGBT, use SSRI’s and Weed. It has become so common that there is a word for it: Tik-Tok Autism

My son in law is one of these. Tring to recreate he says happy childhood memories but it really is just a refusal to really grow up.

My toys are power tools. I am currently using them to build 100’ of fence along my property line. My next project will be a gazebo.

What do train trains and womens’ breasts have in common?

They are both meant for little boys, but their dads always want to play with them.
