GUANGZHOU, China — At his factory in southern China, hat supplier Jeffy Ma is trying to keep up with global demand as well as President Donald Trump’s seismic changes to international trade.
His company, Ace Headwear, sews, embroiders and finishes golf visors, cycling headwear and baseball hats for brands such as Wilson and Fila, as well as for Major League Baseball teams. About 40% of the hats his 350 employees make are sold to the United States.
“For us, the manufacturing profit is very low, so we cannot absorb so much,” Ma told NBC News last week at his factory in the southern Chinese manufacturing hub of Guangzhou. “I think the final result is that the consumer in U.S.A., they will pay.”
The 34% tariffs come on top of earlier tariffs of 10% each that Trump imposed on Chinese goods in February and March. China had announced retaliatory tariffs in response to those as well.
“It’s a mess,” Ma said of the tariffs.

Workers assemble products which include baseball caps, golf visors, and hiking headwear.
the chinese recently murdered millions upon millions of people worldwide. 9 people at my mom’s church died of Covid in the beginning of the plague. All older folks but that doesn’t matter. China could fall off into a sinkhole in hell for all I care. We shouldn’t trade one piece of discounted plastic crap with them.
Oh noze - how will I live without my Chinese baseball caps?
I haven’t worn a ball cap that I can remember since the early 90s.
Just to add insult to National Rifle members, all their caps are made in China. The fact that they could not find even one source here in the USA I find appalling.
This guy needs to up his game and sell those hats in China. we are already overstocked here. I have a lifetime supply in just one closet.
Oh No, Chinese Slave Labor Factories hardest hit by Trump’s Tarriffs.
That’s hopefully one of the benefits of Trump’s tariffs
New Era Cap, from Buffalo New York area, makes and sells a beautiful cap
Even with the tariff, I suspect that Chinese ball caps will be cheaper than U.S. made. But perhaps not cheaper than caps made in a country that makes a deal with Trump. People look at the tariffs announced at the Rose Garden as static. But they are not. The game theory of the situation will result in reductions as countries fall over each other to make a good deal.
George Costanza will never be able to coordinate the purchase of fitted baseball caps for 50,000 Yankee fans now.
The horror!
Speaking of horror, where will Peterman be able to buy the Urban sombrero now?
The biggest problem with price hikes is gouging many stores jacked up priced the day after Trump imposed the tariffs.
Same with some gas stations even coffee went up some places 20 cents a cup.
Greed is always on the hunt for an option.
Motto: Stick it to them and often.
I don’t need a hat.
Even trump hats are made in china.
How will people keep the sun off their necks while driving in their cars?
I felt the same way when U was in the John Wayne Museum in Iowa. Everything in the gift shop said “Made In China”. I left disappointed, with no purchases.
