Carney: America Became an Economic Powerhouse Behind a Big Tariff Wall

On Thursday’s “Alex Marlow Show,” Breitbart News economics editor John Carney discussed tariffs.

Carney stated, “[W]e built a sustainable economy, we did this thing, starting with Alexander Hamilton, where we said it’s really going to matter that we make things in the United States. … Yeah, we’re going to import stuff, we [were] never not going to buy stuff from abroad, but we were going to make sure that the internal American economy was healthy, could produce a lot, provided jobs…not just for people with graduate degrees, not just for somebody who is going to work on Wall Street, but for people with less education…so that means you need an industrial base. We built that economy…behind a very high tariff wall…it built America into an economic powerhouse.”.......

Until passage of the 16th Amendment (1913), the US government was funded by Tariffs. The US became an economic powerhouse under this model.

If we want a Republic, in a increasingly dangerous world because of technology, we need a manufacturing base. The Fascists and Communists don't want America to have this, they want us to have a 'service' economy or 'government welfare economy', both of which will bankrupt this Republic and eventually destroy it, IMHO.

Freedom isn't free. We need to start making, building, and producing if we want Freedom. This is what the public needs to understand.

Spot on. We have been sold down the river and allowed our industrial base to be destroyed. It is a hard slog back, but these are first steps to recover.

Manufacturing was out/offsourced so that politicos (who control when and how) can set up contracts for their relatives. Plus, it allows slave labor for Nike and Apple.

Every country must preserve inside those industries that are essential. And, they must be robust enough to survive a disaster.

We went from a small city’s worth of people in the wilderness, to the most powerful nation in the world, numbering 100 million or so, in about 120 years, with tariffs for the most part as a source of government income.

With manufacturing increasingly reliant on robotics including industries such as textiles that can use robots to sew items, labor costs will shrink relative to shipping/energy costs making manufacturing costs predominantly determined by shipping distances and energy to run plants. Deregulation and advances in robotics are the key things to watch.
The only things that will need to be imported will be specialty and luxury items that are much more discretionary.
Basic staples, food energy, autos, computer chips, energy, pharmaceuticals most construction materials can be made in US which help insulate the country from pandemics like Covid.
It’s time to decouple trade from the US arch enemy China. Only allow imports of non-essential items that no one would miss.

Wow. Where are the usual ignorant Freeper digs against Alexander Hamilton? I assume they’ll show up soon.

BTW, the US largely paid off its enormous Revolutionary War debts by selling western lands.
