"I have loved women even to madness, but I have always loved liberty better." I think it's pretty clear he loved libertinism, not liberty. Note that Casanova became lonely and bitter in his later years. Sadly predictable, as the life of a bon vivant often...isn't.
Interestingly, Casanova was friends with Lorenzo da Ponte, the librettist who worked with Mozart on the opera, Don Giovanni. If you're familiar with Don Giovanni, the main character is very similar to Casanova...and he comes to a rather dramatic end.
