Breaking News: Val Kilmer dead at 65
New York Times ^ | April 1, 2025 | Bruce Webber

Val Kilmer, a homegrown Hollywood actor who tasted leading-man stardom as Jim Morrison and Batman, but whose protean gifts and elusive personality also made him a high-profile supporting player, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 65.

The cause was pneumonia, said his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer. Mr. Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and later recovered, she said.

Tall and handsome in a rock-star sort of way, Mr. Kilmer was in fact cast as a rocker a handful of times early in his career, when he seemed destined for blockbuster success. He made his feature debut in a slapstick Cold War spy-movie spoof, “Top Secret!” (1984), in which he starred as a crowd-pleasing, hip-shaking American singer in Berlin unwittingly involved in an East German plot to reunify the country.

He gave a vividly stylized performance as Morrison, the emblem of psychedelic sensuality, in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors” (1991)

(As far as hollywood characters...
There will always be only ONE James Bond...Sean Connery

...and yet, there will always be only ONE Simon Templar, Roger Moore

...and yet, there will always be only ONE Doc Holliday, Val Kilmer...)

What about Superman? Batman?

“I am the Lizard King. I can do anything.”

Sort of describes Kilmer’s demeanor in some of his roles.

The moving retreat gunfight scene in Heat was so realistic that a friend of mine that was in an aero scout platoon in Vietnam had to leave the theatre because it gave him flashbacks. The timing of the fire move fire reload etc. just hit him hard. He was able to watch it when it came out on dvd.
I liked the Saint remake as he caught the humor of the Saint as well. His disguise changes reminded me of Ross Martin in the WWW. I really liked him in Tombstone, especially the cup twirling where he was mocking Johnny Ringo while quoting classical literature. I hope he was wearing his boots. RIP

I’d probably go Christopher Reeve and Michael Keaton, but I haven’t watched the newer iterations...or read the comic books when I was a kid.

Excellent movie, eh? Although the more I’ve learned about De Niro, the less inclined I am to watch it again, as I’ve already watched it 3-4 times.

Here's an article from The Hollywood Reporter. No pay wall.

Val Kilmer, Actor Revered for Playing Batman and Jim Morrison, Dies at 65

Not sure if it's covered in the Slimes or not. His father was an aerospace engineer and real estate developer. His other was a housewife. His younger sibling Wesley suffered from epilepsy, had a seizure in their pool and drown. Kilmer's father had bought the pool from Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Val Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015. He did a documentary of his life that was shown at Cannes in 2021. It showed him needing a breathing tube. When I watched his scene with Cruise in the Maverick sequel released in 2022, he was wearing a scarf around his neck.

You will be missed Val. RIP!!
