I would describe Greeley as somewhat mercurial, in that as a Radical Republican he supported the Civil Rights 13th, 14th & 15th Amendments, but then turned against Pres. Grant's enforcement of Reconstruction, favoring a more lenient "home rule" approach toward former Confederate states.

In 1872, Greeley ran as a Democrat & Liberal Republican against Pres. Grant's reelection.

Greeley's letter, referred to here, sounds like something the 1864 Democratic candidate for president, Gen. George McClellan, might have proposed.
