A Russian negotiator has warned that peace talks with the US on the war in Ukraine could drag into 2026. Grigory Karasin, who led talks with the US in Saudi Arabia on March 24, said on Friday that there may be no decisive results from talks with the US.
“It would have been naive to expect any breakthroughs,” Karasin said to Russian state TV Channel Rossiya 24.
-snip-
It comes after Russia effectively rejected a 30-day pause in the fighting proposed by the US. It also asked for sanctions against food and fertiliser to be lifted - along with the rowing back of EU economic sanctions - after the US said it would “help restore Russia’s access to the world market for agricultural and fertiliser exports” for a ceasefire in the Black Sea.
Europe is currently not keen to lift sanctions and Kremlin critics are sceptical Russia wants much progress in peace talks as it makes incremental gains on the battlefield. US President Donald Trump said on March 25 Russia might be “dragging their feet”.
Military analysts in Ukraine assess Russia’s forces are preparing to launch a fresh military offensive in the coming weeks to maximise the pressure on Ukraine and strengthen the Kremlin’s negotiating position in ceasefire talks. They believe the Kremlin is preparing a multi-pronged push across the 621-mile front line.
Putin, meanwhile, said on Thursday that Russian forces are close to “finishing off” Ukrainian defenders. “On the entire front line, the strategic initiative is completely in the hands of the Russian armed forces,” Mr Putin said on Thursday at a forum in the Arctic port of Murmansk. “Our troops, our guys are moving forward and liberating one territory after another, one settlement after another, every day.”

Cute, posting Trump's comment on March 7 blaming Ukraine.
How about posting a more recent Trump statement, after Russia refused to agree to a 30 day ceasfire?
“I think that Russia wants to see an end to it, but it could be they’re dragging their feet. I’ve done it over the years,” March 25, 2025
The world is bigger than your little hopes.
Trump is for peace, Ukraine has agreed to a 30 day total ceasefire, only (no surprise), Putin refused, and continues to invade Ukraine and according to you, that is somehow Ukraine/Zelensky's fault. Okay
So let's just wait it out.
Russian troops are taking land too fast and easily now as Ukrainian troops are finally being allowed to retreat rather than being slaughtered in-situ. Looking at the situation from Putin’s view he should keep right on going and keep the pressure on. The other problem for Ukraine is they have lost the equipment used to remove damaged tanks, personnel carriers, artillery pieces etc. from the fields for repair.
Oh BS. The terms are to continue the present grift, oh and Putin must clear out.
Z has not agreed to anything.
How is Zelensky "dragging his feet" when he agreed to the proposed US 30 day total ceasefire, which Russia turned down?
At this point, its clear that the only party in this conflict that does not want peace is Putin.
“NATO has been lying...”
...a lot.
There is currently no ceasefire, because Putin refuses to stop invading Ukraine. Zelensky agreed to the Trump proposed immediate 30 day total ceasefire which was to preclude negotiations. Putin turned it down, demanding many additional concessions.
Ukraine agrees to proposal for ceasefire with Russia as US restores aid and intel sharing March 12, 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that Ukraine had accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States, following critical peace talks between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.
The ceasefire proposal accepted by Ukraine covers the entire front line of the fighting with Russia, not just the air and sea, Zelensky said after the more than eight-hour long meeting.
“Ukraine accepts this proposal, we consider it positive, we are ready to take such a step, and the United States of America must convince Russia to do so,” Zelensky said, adding that the ceasefire would start the moment Moscow agrees to it.
Putin lays out sweeping questions and tough demands about 30-day ceasefire proposal March 14, 2025
Russian President Vladimir Putin questioned the United States-brokered proposal for a ceasefire in the Ukraine war on Thursday, setting forth tough conditions and demanding concessions from Kyiv despite saying he supported a truce in theory
Putin also suggested that Ukraine halt mobilization and any training of its troops, and that other nations stop supplying weapons to Kyiv during the ceasefire – at a time when “Russian troops are advancing on almost all areas of combat contact.”
If it is not on paper and signed by both parties, there is no agreement.
No such piece of paper existed so neither side agreed to anything.
If there is no agreement, nobody could violate it.
The losing side is the first to call for a ceasefire. They could get one by surrendering. Or they can continue to lose land, structures, equipment and lives, which is what they will do for now.
Nicely laid out comment but doesn’t comport with reality.
There is no national interest in Ukraine and no reason waste anymore tax dollars on it.
Great, please point out the inaccuracies.
Only an idiot or someone dishonest doesn't realize that.
The war should only end if Ukraine concedes the annexed territory to Russia. The people in the annexed area do NOT want to go back to being part of Ukraine.
And, Russia isn't tolerating a NATO proxy army on its border. Nor should it.
Right, and there is currently no 30 day ceasefire, because only ONE party to the conflict rejected the Trump proposal, Putin
Well good luck on dealing with Finland.
But, it's nowhere near the land mass nor does Finland have an army the size of Ukraine.
“How is Zelensky “dragging his feet” when he agreed to the proposed US 30 day total ceasefire, which Russia turned down?”
Z is asking Russia for a ceasefire, “agreeing” doesn’t apply here.
Z agreeing with USA is meaningless. Z needs a ceasefire, Russia sees a ceasefire as Ukraine looking to stop the taking of land the only way they can (other than surrender).
