[OFFICIAL.]

WAR DEPARTMENT, WASHINGTON, March 24 -- 9 P.M.

Maj.-Gen. John A. Dix, New York:

The following extracts from the Richmond papers were received this evening, at 8:30, from Gen. GRANT. EDWIN M. STANTON,

Secretary of War.

CITY POINT, March 23.

Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War:

Richmond papers are received. The following is from the Dispatch:

It is understood in official circles that no fighting has occurred in North Carolina since Sunday; and from all we can learn, it appears that SHERMAN has attempted no advance since his check on that day. JOHNSTON telegraphs that in that battle the Confederate loss was 450, while that of the enemy was 3,300. The fight took place at Averysboro, on the Cape Fear River, half-way between Raleigh and Fayetteville.

Gen. JOHNSTON's defeat of the enemy last Sunday, the 19th inst., occurred at Bentonsville, near the Neuse River.

By these facts we are informed that SHERMAN is pushing toward Raleigh in two columns; one moving due north from Fayetteville, the other northwest from Newbern. Gen. HARDEE fought the former, and Gen. JOHNSTON the latter.

U.S. GRANT, Lieutenant-General.

OUR SOUTHERN FILES.

We have received files of Richmond papers of Wednesday, March 22. They contain little military news of importance. It is remarkable and significant that they have very little to say of JOHNSTON's "great victory" over SHERMAN, though they give publicity to a report that JOHNSTON had gained "another victory."

THE CAROLINAS.

ANOTHER "REBEL VICTORY."

From the Richmond Whig, March 22.

It was reported this forenoon that Gen. JOHNSTON had again assaulted the enemy, and gained another victory, but, after inquiry, we are satisfied there was no foundation for the report,
