Though I have friends who own Teslas, I don’t know anything about them. That said, I thought this article was interesting and that some folks here might enjoy it.
The “New Y” model has impressive specs including fewer body parts (less gaps)...but, aesthetically, the body design is quite boring.
It’s become vogue on the right to trash electric vehicles …False, M. What “the right” takes umbrage with is government trying to force electric vehicles on us.
They’re good cars.
They have performance and interesting features.
I don’t want one. 250-300 miles and then a long charge up.
No thanks.
Very expensive too.
Rich liberals loved them.
I recently saw a jeep plugged in to a charger in a parking lot. It occurred to me that there is something wrong with an electric jeep.
What a stupid, ignorant statement.
There was also an initial novelty factor that makes all of the new experiences, even charging, fun. But that wears off over time, especially the need to worry about finding charging stations and the wait while it is occurring. In fairness, since I was renting and didn’t have a home charging unit my experience of always having to go to a Supercharger was not typical, and a real owner would probably charge overnight at home most of the time. Even so, Tesla has done an exceptional job of designing the charging system, from the software in the car to the Superchargers themselves, in a way that makes charge monitoring and recharging as smooth as possible.
The biggest disappointment, though it falls more into the annoyance category, was that the car rattled more than any car I’ve owned myself. And from what I’ve read online, this is a common occurrence with Teslas. I suspect it’s due to the weight of the car coupled with a fairly stiff suspension. That combination likely shakes a few things loose going over bumps.
Overall, I really enjoyed driving the car, once I got used to its quirks. If, as rumored, they come out with a smaller cheaper model I might consider it for a second car just for running short trips around town. It would be perfect for that. But until then, I would probably not buy a Tesla quite yet. But the memory of that insane acceleration does nag at me once in a while (Just be careful at first. My first lane change on the highway after picking up the car nearly sent me into the wall because I just mashed the accelerator to get ahead of a car approaching in the lane I was moving into, like I would have on my ICE car. Only took once to realize how much power is behind that pedal and that it is instantaneously available. Once I learned to take it easy intentional bursts of speed were glorious).
Your “gas” station is your garage.
and for say apartment dwellers
shut up and get on the bus
for the lefty trolls lurking
you want to shut down musk for good?
i mean really get him!
admit that climate change isnt really a thing
and evs are not necessary to save the earth
We’re looking at moving back to China next year to be closer to my wife’s family and one of our daughters.
China has really pushed the electric cars. They literally have charging stations everywhere and we’ll probably buy either a Tesla or BYD if we move to Shenzhen. It will work for us because most driving will be around town.
My wife insisted on replacing her leased Ford F150 Lariat with a Tesla Model Y.
As an engineer, I continue to be impressed with the quality and content of this fine machine! The article is correct…the Tesla is built from the ground up as an integrated platform. Over the air software updates eliminate 90% of the return to dealer work.
This vehicle is more than transportation, it is an integrated platform. I wish we could afford a Cyber Truck, but I am grateful for the Model Y!
Teslas are probably the best of the EVs, but all EVs are built on a stupid premise - that gasoline is evil and will destroy the planet while electricity from coal or natural gas is good, and will save humanity. EVs are so essential to the goal of ridding the planet of excellent presently made cars with internal combustion engines (made by the companies that have been making them for nearly a century and continually improving them) that the EVs must be subsidized by the taxpayer and so must the cost of national recharging networks. All of this is wrong, a lie. Even now, under Trump, the government is still forcing the excellent gasoline engines out of existence with EPA mandates on emissions and mileage designed to force the manufacturers to drop them. There should be no government involvement in the design of cars. None. And no subsidies. This should all stop now. And if Trump really likes American manufacturing he should immediately and publicly end all of the regulations of the industry and encourage GM/Ford/Chrysler to relaunch their internal combustion cars and let them lead the world back to sane autos. And henceforth, no government preference about cars. End all subsidies and all regulations. And, encourage the oil companies to get back to maximum production and exploration.
I still say it is laughable to think that consciousness—life— can be created in computer circuitry. I have read where the computer speaks, as it were, in the first person. That is only because it is programmed to do so by a human.
Computers can be programmed to weigh facts. But it has to be programmed to weigh facts.
It is claimed that in the near future, computers will be able to design computers. Why do people think the result will be accurate and true? That would require that the originatng computers would have to be 100% accurate, which is impossible. And in the world that moves at the speed of light, a tiny error would increase exponentially in a second.
I don’t want to drive a computer. This article was obviously written by an Apple-phile, soy boy, who sees cars as an appliance. I owned one Apple computer and hated it. It was expensive (Tesla), couldn’t be upgraded, (Tesla or any EV), and would only work with other Apple products (Tesla). It was pretty, but as a usable business computer it was worthless. I’d say the same about Teslas and EVs in general. Limited range, long recharge times, heavily effected by temperature, and can’t tow or carry heavy loads if it’s a truck. A rolling technological wonder that does none of the things a motor vehicle is supposed to do as well as an ICE vehicle and cost more. Very Apple like.
Today, to work on an automobile, you have to be a mechanic, an electrician, and a computer hardware/software expert.
It’s a car. Point A to point B. People wanting infotainment or thinking zipping through traffic are the accident makers.
I don’t own a Tesla but I do own a Ford Lightning and a Hyundai Ioniq 5. Of the 38 vehicles I have owned in my life they are the best. I am not virtue signaling. I just like new technology. I recently test drove a Tesla Cybertruck and it is really the top when it comes to technology. Drive by wire and rear wheel steering. I’m really tempted but my Ford Lightning is so comfortable and easy to drive.
I think a lot of people don’t realize that Tesla is the only company that can make a profit off EV’s. Therefore getting rid of the subsidy HELPS Tesla and will make other manufacturers leave the market, allowing Tesla to be on top.
The author is guilty of over stating his case.
EVs = remote coal burning devices.
