High school coach breaks silence after getting fired for pulling player’s ponytail

The longtime upstate New York high school girls’ basketball coach, Jim Zullo, has spoken out following his firing for yanking his player’s hair. Zullo’s son, Sam, shared his father’s statement to news outlets, including WNYT.

“I deeply regret my behavior following the loss to La Fargeville Friday night in the Class D state championship game,” Zullo said. “I want to offer my sincerest apologies to Hailey and her family, our team, the good folks at Northville Central Schools and our community. As a coach, under no circumstance is it acceptable to put my hands on a player, and I am truly sorry.” “I wish I could have those moments back. I am grateful for the opportunity to have coached girls basketball at Northville the past two years, especially last season, which was a difficult time for our family,” Zullo said.

In the viral clip that led to his termination, Zullo, 81, walked up behind Hailey Monroe and tugged on her ponytail before then yelling in her face. Monroe’s teammate stood up for her and fired back at Zullo during the altercation. Monroe looked to be crying both before and after the incident, which came as they were watching their opponents celebrate its New York State Championship. Monroe is a senior and the program’s all-time leading scorer but had fouled out in the game.

An 81 year old white mail coaching girls basketball?
Guess he wasn’t a DEI hire.

Those were college-aged football players, not high school girls.

That was obviously quite a vicious tug on that girls hair he did there. If that were my girlfriend or daughter, that dude would have been picking up his teeth from the deck of the basketball court. My hero is the girl who stuck up for her teammate.

This coward sent his son to deliver the apology? That speaks as much as the harassment charges.

Zullo, 81, told reporters the player had cursed at him after he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team.

Oh, THAT makes ALL the difference in the world. /sarc

What a loser. 81 and still hanging around young women? And then pops yanks on the woman’s hair?

It’s hard to tell if this cretin is simply sliding down the bad side of Alzheimer’s or simply a grumpy - and maybe dirty - old coot who should have stayed in retirement.

The fact that his son had to apologize (parenthetically, the headline is wrong) is equally telling.

I’m an old school guy in many ways. But, it’s time to pasture this guy. Getting fired should probably be the lesser worry than the wrath of a good father.

Reverse the sexes of the coach and the ponytailed player, and then tell me if you would still feel as much outrage.

Regards,

Of course not. Civilized, unwoke men field that way. Are we transgender women out here, who think it's okay to use our masculine bodies to bash women? No.

Anyway, an adult coach never should have done thing to any player, male or female. If she was cursing, he had every right to kick her our, kick her off the team, suspend her, whatever, but no excuse to get physical. But of course, men don't do this to women. That's only become controversial recently.

It’s not uncommon this happens to some older people,, they can’t control their emotions as well as they did in earlier years, especially in quick time decision making.. coaches are no exception

Punching an 81 year old hard enough to knock out teeth would likely result in death and you’d go to jail for a long time. But you do you.

Sorry, that’s no excuse. If he cannot control his emotions, whether 81 or 41 or any age, he should not be coaching.

it’s not an excuse in fact my point was the opposite.. it is the very reason you don’t want elderly people coaching
