When I was starting out as a Chicago City Hall reporter for that big metropolitan paper—when we could smoke in newsrooms on deadline, curse, tell jokes, laugh and wore jackets and ties to work—I had one rule.
I’d often discuss this rule with my political sources, elected officials, cops, city workers and others:
Lie to me just once, just once, and I’ll burn you to the ground.
It wasn’t an empty threat. Chicago politics wasn’t a cloistered convent. It was and remains a place of thieves protected by the laws and regulations that they themselves controlled. It is a Democrat Barter Town and like all such towns it is hell bent on strangling itself. And there was one top aide to the mayor who thought himself a master manipulator. Frank lied to me and I burned him.
I burned him repeatedly, mercilessly, using a line often attributed to the poet Richard Brautigan: “He’d sell a rat’s asshole to a blind man for a wedding ring.”

What a fearless essay! This summing-up of NYT’s 21st-century misdeeds, although we have denounced them here one-by-one, is in its entirety newly appalling.
I'm surprised at your post, dp. What do you deny that he said in the article?
Tell me, when you use the term “Legacy Media” do you
point your nose skyward, arch your eyebrows and speak
in reverent tones?
OK, that was nasty but I’ve been noticing this new
term since some time last year. Yellow Journalism is
more appropriate and ought to be used more often.
Legacy Media my A$$ !
The term was coined because the mainstream media is no longer as dominant as it had been since the mid 20th Century, when the rise of network television and the consolidation of local newspapers by large chains squeezed out locally owned, and sometimes conservative, news sources. While earlier newspaper chains like the Hearst and McCormick interests, were conservative, the second generation of these families were liberal or sold out to liberal interests like Gannett or the New York Times. The Big Three old TV networks were owned by liberals from the start, as was CNN under the leadership of Ted Turner.
What made the legacy media no longer mainstream were:
* Declining readership/viewership in both raw numbers and percentage of the population.
* The consistent leftism of these outlets permanently alienating the conservative half of the population.
* The consistent resistance from talk radio from about 1990 onward, led by Rush Limbaugh.
* Since 2010, the rise of Internet podcasts and social media as alternative news sources.
* Attempts by Big Tech and the Biden Administration to censor dissent failing.
The media hasn’t been deserving of the term “Legacy” since “Watergate.” Oh, thirty years ago Democrats were the red states. They didn’t like that and all of a sudden they changed colors, but not their nasty politics.
The term, legacy, often refers someone who deserves honor, such as legacy athletes or military. However, you would not expect ex-athletes or ex-soldiers above 60 years old to perform on the playing field or military operations as they would have in their 20s. Can Michael Jordan or Troy Aikman compete in the NBA or NFL in 2025? Obviously not, as they retired two decades ago.
The term, legacy media, is synonymous with old media, since its roots date to the mid-20th Century consolidation of the broadcast and print news media by liberal conglomerates. It was the conservative, libertarian, and alt-right alternative media sources that brought the term to prominence, not the old media sources. Use of term indicates that the TV networks and the well known news sources like Time or the Washington Post are no longer the mainstream. The facts that Trump is in the White House and Republicans are in the majority in both houses of Congress and a majority of state legislatures are evidence of their declining influence. Despite the 24-7 "Orange Man bad, sexual perversion good, whites and Christians bad" narrative, a majority of voters rejected their tales.
Um, yeah OK. Points well taken, but if Washington Post NY Times NBC, CBS etc. start referring to themselves as the “Legacy Media” then all bets are off. And you know what? I don’t know if that’s the case or not. I’ll just have to pay more attention. Thanks for the replies.
