Poland aims for up to a million mines on eastern borders amid Russia threat

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia intend to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention banning the use and stockpiling of anti-personnel mines, the defense ministers of the four countries have announced in a joint statement.

The ministers said that since signing the treaty, “the security situation in our region has fundamentally deteriorated.”

Leaving the 1997 treaty, which has been ratified or acceded to by more than 160 nations but not by Russia, will allow Poland and the three Baltic countries to start stockpiling landmines again.

The ministers highlighted the threat posed by Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, describing the situation as an “unstable security environment” characterized by Moscow’s “threat to the Euro-Atlantic community.”

As a result, they said, it has become “essential to evaluate all measures to strengthen our deterrence and defense capabilities,” particularly on NATO’s “vulnerable eastern flank.”

Not enough. The U.S. has shown how static defenses can be easily be breached, including land mines.

Good for them.

Good on them. There will also be a side effect — illegals will go up too.

Why not put them along Meccico border?

Here - I'll     t   y   p   e     R     E     A     L     s     l     o     w, so's you can understand.

They were for banning the use of land mimes, and for banning the stockpiling of mimes - until they decided they needed mimes.

It's like your neighbor being against you having guns - until one day he decides he needs guns, too.

Then, guns are "suddenly" OK.

Another term for that sort of thinking is "hypocrisy".

But Tusk is still refusing to institute conscription.

Not too worried, is he?

So, anymore Ukrainian refugees fleeing will run the risk of being blown up a land mine if they crossover into Poland?

How lovely.

Don’t underestimate the possibility that these mines are being set to deter a potential flood of Ukrainians if the Poles believe the war will continue as it has been going.

You're wrong as usual, Marcus.

The mines are all the more reasons for Lukashenko to send Muslim and third-world illegals across the Polish border -- by force if necessary. 😀

Pollocks will be blowing themselves and their children up real good for the next fifty years with their own mines. Something about hoisting on one's own petard.

Furthermore, their military ambitions do not even include all of Ukraine. This is a limited conflict (SMO) where Russia has a specific political and military goal (block NATO accession and seize ethnic Russian areas in East).

Think again. Putin's stated war aims include:

  1. Ukraine ceding the remainder of the oblasts claimed by Russia.
  2. Reduction of the Ukrainian army to a token force that would be unable to defend the country from further Russian aggression.
  3. Beyond no NATO, no alliances of any kind.
  4. No foreign security guarantees against further Russian aggression.
  5. The forced installation of an unelected pro-Russian government.
  6. Suppression of Ukrainian nationalism.
  7. Promotion of the Russian language and culture.
This is all prelude to the eventual reabsorption of Ukraine into Russia. Putin knows that he might not be able to get it all in one go, but that is the ultimate aim. You are fooling yourself if you think that this is only about NATO expansion and a few supposedly ethnic Russian provinces.

Not enough.

The Poles are simultaneously enacting other measures.
