Ukraine 'strikes Russian airfield' where Putin houses nuclear bombers sparking huge mushroom cloud explosion

A massive explosion of ammunition triggering a giant mushroom cloud today hit Engels-2, home of a military airport for Russia's nuclear strategic bomber aircraft.

Ammunition warehouses crammed with suspected missiles and a military-linked aviation fuel oil facility were hit and ablaze in the Ukrainian blitzkrieg, and there was damage to a hospital from falling drone debris after it was downed by air defences.

Massive secondary explosions of ammunition were reported from the strike with dozens of residential properties nearby suffering damage, and smoke visible from more than six miles away.

After the detonation of the ammunition store in Engels-2, debris scattered more than three miles from the exploding missiles, say reports.

One theory is that a new supply of Kh-101 missiles had arrived at the airbase on an Il-76 transport plane, and that Ukraine had intelligence about it. At the time of the explosion, three Tu-95MS and two Tu-160s strategic bombers were at the Engels-2 airbase.

An urgent evacuation of civilians 'for safety reasons' was reportedly ordered and the closure of schools in the area, including Saratov city after the 4am attack.

Engels-2 is a major base for Russia's Tu-95MS and Tu-160 aircraft, and warehouses nearby are believed to store deadly Kh-101 and Kh-55 types missiles among other weapons.

The Daily Mail (i.e. the EuroTrash) loves war porn. I hope the Russians give the UK a good heaping dose of it, up close and personal. /spit

Perhaps the 1000s of russian attacks on Ukraine civilian infrastructure would be more your speed.

Russia is just getting “a good heaping dose” of what they have been handing out.

Wonder if this was part of pitin’s initial war plan?

Certainly hope some of those aircraft were casualties of this attack. Russia can build missiles, but the aircraft on not replaceable.

Was it Ukraine or the Deep State because they want to keep the war going?

All part of the negotiation process. If all they did was hold position, their weakness or stupidity would be demonstrated. Best of luck...be wise as serpents.

---- "The Daily Mail (i.e. the EuroTrash) loves war porn. "

Using a number of different news aggregating sites akin to Free Republic, this seemingly singular explosion hasn't yet "hit the headlines."

That this thread is 'graced' for four different photos of the one "huge mushroom cloud" in interesting, as the four are sourced to Twitter/X. In a war, sides hit each other, of course. One explosion doesn't make for an end to the war, and, because this is war, retaliatory strikes seem the next "war porn" news.

While looking through a number of aggregating sites, there was an interesting link related to the Ukraine-Russia war. Most interesting:

Ukrainian Hit Lists Wage Cold Terror on Americans J6 Matt's Substack, Matt da Silva, 19 March 2025.

J6 Matt on Truth Social "J6er and former USN Japanese and Chinese Mandarin linguist. Former intelligence analyst for AMLAW 100 corporate law firm and federal contracting tech start up."

It is interesting that this one Engels base explosion, from four perspectives plus a recently added editorial mash-up, are from one of FR's daily "war porn" posters. Some will be cheering, and others questioning. What ever the outcome of the Ukraine-Russia war, it is certain both sides will experience more losses, men and materiel. This is a war being "fought" with PR campaigns in the moment, and the British press seems full-throated in their coverage -- sometimes.

Personally, I blame Macron and Starmer for aggravating an already bad situation...WHILE talks were in progress. Trump needs to deal with them, TOO.

Besides, what IDIOT would be emboldened simply on the strength of French or English promises??? Z is a moron!!

Zelinsky must be taken out for this war to end.

He is not capable of negotiating an end to this idiocy.

Why would Russia spare the surrounded Kursk invaders when Zelinsky bombs Russian nuclear depots?

Trolling trolling trolling, keep on trolling Marco. Did an Obama Judge switch your USAID payments back on?

Perfectly understandable. Ukraine is physically much closer to them than to the US. Given GOP mutterings about exiting NATO, including from Musk, and Trump’s request for a cumulative 40% cut to defense, it’s clear that the US security guarantee is up in the air. If war is coming to Europe, better that Russia not have access to another 40m people, and be hundreds of miles closer.

From Zelensky’s standpoint, it makes perfect sense to continue the war, so long as he can get enough support to keep bleeding Russia. I can’t see any scenario under which the US would give up 20% of its territory without taking terrible damage.

Caterwauling aside, Ukraine has barely been grazed. It lost 6.8m people in WW2 from a similar population. It claims 100K dead so far. Russians claim 1m Ukrainian dead, still a far cry from WW2.
