NEW YORK β The U.S. still has a major case of French bulldog fever, but a very different breed is staunchly chasing dog lovers' hearts, according to American Kennel Club statistics released Tuesday.
For the third year in a row, the comical, controversial Frenchie tops the club's annual rundown of the nation's most prevalent purebred dogs.
Frenchies are followed by Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles and some other longtime faves. (Rounding out the top 10: dachshunds, beagles, Rottweilers, bulldogs and German shorthaired pointers.)
Yet keep an eye on the cane corso. The powerful, protective breed vaulted from nearly 50th to 14th in the rankings in just a decade.
Popularity is seen as a mixed blessing among dog breeders and as an outright scourge by their critics. Some animal welfare activists say the AKC rankings drive fads that fuel puppy mills. The AKC says the list documents, not promotes, dog-ownership trends, and the nonprofit club notes that it conducts thousands of breeder and pet store inspections per year.

dachshunds are best. #1 doggie.
I’m writing these words with a dachshund asleep in my lap :-)
Not much of a retriever, but amusing.
Frenchies are cute, but there’s no way I’d own one - too high maintenance and now the well-bred ones are kidnap targets. My main criteria for my next dog: friendly, mid-energy (no Belgian Malinois), low maintenance and small so I don’t need to deal with picking up large dog poops.
French Bulldogs. For those who enjoy the
“So ugly that he’s cute!” look.
We got a Maltipoo 4 months ago. He’s 6 months old now. Very small but what a character!
We have mini doxxies. They are Sooooo lovable, but can be super stubborn. We have a little male who is an inveterate bully, but he’s not a bit mean. We have a female who’s 1 year older, but the minute I brought the male home, at 8 weeks, he immediately established his dominance over her, and she allowed it. But she never forgot what it was like before he arrived. She lets me see a little of that, now and then. He’s a huge attention hog. If I spend time with the female, he’s got to have his nose right there in the middle of us. They enrich our lives.
My 2 Aussies are the best!
I prefer mutts, but I broke down and got my wife two great Danes. She likes Great Danes.
Can you imagine what a #160 lap dog is like?
I never see French Bulldogs. Who has them. I see more labs and lab mixes than anything else.
exactly
Same here. Our best ones were the βwhat kind of dog is that?β π
The real sheepdog/border collie breeders do NOT want AKC recognition. AKC would breed the BRAINS out of Border Collies, & breed just for "looks".
BIG resistance to the AKC.
that they enrich our lives is only one of their superpowers. That they are best dog is actually beyond debate. iβm glad we all settled that.
They are not harmless. They are currently mostly used as LGD or guard dogs but they were originally bred as war dogs. And they were good at that job.
They should not be around children unless they and the children have both been trained as to how to interact with each other.
Absolutely!
And my two 4 legged gangsters agree!
