Driskill Calls Closure Of Devils Tower “Stupidity At Highest Levels”
Cowboy State Daily ^ | March 13, 2025 | Andrew Rossi

Posted on 03/14/2025 5:22:38 AM PDT by Red Badger

There will be no after hours at Devils Tower National Monument. The monument abruptly announced Tuesday that, starting Thursday, the monument is no longer open 24/7 and will only be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The change was announced on the Devils Tower Facebook page. The monument, usually open 24 hours a day, will be closed overnight.

The National Park Service (NPS) has not provided a reason for the sudden change, and Cowboy State Daily couldn’t reach anyone at Devils Tower National Monument for additional clarification. That includes more information about whether that includes camping at the nation’s first national monument.

Public response to the sudden change has not been favorable.

“This is stupidity at its highest level,” said state Sen. Ogden Driskill, R-Devils Tower, whose family has lived at the base of the tower for generations. “Devils Tower has been open 24 hours a day, unstaffed, for 50 years. It’s been that way forever, and I think it’s absolutely ridiculous to do this.”

Wouldn’t that be sweet? President Trump personally “thanking” Bob Smith for closing the park at night. He could say “All we needed was a new Park Director.”

Closed for the lunar eclipse? Maybe temporary due to fear of lunar-tics colliding in the night?

“All of that are simply mushy nice sound bite excuses.”

The problem with government “stewardship” of public lands from agencies like the BLM and NPS is that the one area/park/district manager is an unquestioned GOD over that facility.

They do not have to even explain or account for why they make decisions they do. And there is absolutely no going over their heads or appeal process. They are like Judges and have absolute personal power and absolute immunity. They can write their own laws as they see fit.

This is too much power to give one person without any way to question it and it needs to be changed.

Sell it to a private company and put the proceeds towards the debt. Nope. Can’t do that. Too responsible.

Until the reason for the closure is announced, then tossing possibles into the ring is very short sided. I’ve been there a number of times and have enjoyed the visit especially watching the climbers. But the reason may be understandable. So wait for it before passing judgement just because it inconveniences the people in the article.

Someone needs to be fired for insubordination.

They shouldn’t be “sold” to private, they should remain public lands. But the stewardship and care-taking should be contracted out to private.

This is what States do with interstate rest area facilities and such and it works well and saves money...

Remember when Obama shut down the National parks and monuments? They placed road cones in all the pull off areas around Mt Rushmore to keep people from stopping and looking at the mountain. It might have been illegal to even glance at the mountain when you were driving by.

I actually liked the short spoof of this movie shown on HBO back then. The singing mail boxes... “Gonna build a mountain, in your living room....”

I have a feeling only the visitor center will be closed and open areas of the park grounds themselves will be open.

We’ve been there once. Seeing that place is a been there done that event. In other words, it’s only worth seeing once.

That’s our opinion, however places like Yellowstone or the Black Hills are well worth repeat trips.

You are probably correct.

Or else, to cut costs, there may have been a blanket order about new visiting hours at all monuments and this might have just got caught up in it.

This is a typical loser bureaucrat move. We were there last summer. The park service is full of lefty nitwits who are greenies who’s main purpose in life seems to be inconveniencing people who visit these sites.

Liz Cheney resides on the other side of the state, SW of Jackson Hole, where all the liberal celebrities fly in on their private jets to ski and be seen.
