The Brief
Doctors at a state mental health facility say Darriynn Brown is now capable of understanding the capital murder charge that he's facing. Brown is accused of kidnapping 4-year-old Cash Gernon from his bedroom in Dallas and stabbing him to death. Prosecutors have video and DNA evidence that links Brown to the crime. Brown's defense team suggested he may be entitled to an insanity defense. DALLAS - The man accused of kidnapping a Dallas 4-year-old from his bed and murdering him is now competent to stand trial, a judge declared.
What's new: According to court records, 22-year-old Darriynn Brown underwent treatment through an "outpatient competency restoration program" and is now capable of understanding the charges against him and able to participate in his own defense.
Doctors notified the court of his competency, and a judge signed off on the order last week.
Brown was transferred from the Terrell State Hospital to the Dallas County jail and may now stand trial for capital murder.
Dallas 4-year-old Cash Gernon murdered
An arrest affidavit says a baby video monitoring system showed Darriynn Brown, 18, taking Cash Gernon, 4, from his bed just hours before the child's body was found in a southwest Dallas street. Cash’s body was found the next morning by a jogger eight blocks away from the home on Saddleridge Drive in Dallas. Investigators said the little boy had been stabbed to death.
According to the murder affidavit, Cash’s blood was found on Brown’s clothes.

Maybe Cash will finally get a measure of Justice?
Here is the baby cam image, perhaps avoid it if you have a tender heart: https://images.app.goo.gl/1S55Kxm9QniSdaws8
I remember this.......................
Without young fatherless “teens”, how could our prisons survive?
“OUTPATIENT”???!!!
The judge who permitted THAT should be sent to an insane asylum.
And I would voluntarily strap him into the chair / gurney / what ever they call where they secure victims for a firing squad
No problem. If he’s mentally deficient he won’t know we are executing him
Just in case he's not sure, I'd volunteer to tell him twice.
I remember this case. Earlier news reports posted to FR give more info on the background.
Before this sicko murdered this helpless child, he tried to abduct another child, but that child’s grandfather fought him off.
After murdering 4-year-old Cash, the killer returned to the house to abduct Cash’s twin brother, but he left without taking him.
Both boys were living with their father’s ex-girlfriend who was not their biological mother. Their father had custody, but he left them there and ran off.
The killer knew the family and lived nearby.
I have never understood why insanity should be a reason to excuse murderers for having brutally murdered someone. Help me out here.
To me it’s MORE of a reason to execute.
Harder or impossible to reason. I think the original framers meant stark, raving mad, out of their mind. This ghetto hater trash like most “insane” today are dam well enough aware to:
Break in the house
Sneak in the dark
Throw or hide the murder weapon
Hide
LIE
This scum also attempted to kidnap a 2 year old girl a year earlier.
All of this shows he knew dam well what he was doing was wrong.
Totally agree.
I think the original framers meant stark, raving mad, out of their mind.
Could you explain more what you mean? There's nothing about madness or insanity in the Constitution.
