WNBA player Angel Reese ignited a social media firestorm after claiming players are prepared to sit out games to demand higher salaries during her podcast Friday.
Reese and fellow WNBA player DiJonai Carrington addressed the next WNBA collective bargaining agreement.
"I've got to get in the meetings because I'm hearing like, 'If y'all don't give us what we want, we sitting out,'" Reese said.
Carrington added, "That's a possibility."
Reese has griped about her financial situation in the past.
"The WNBA don't pay my bills at all. I don't even think it pays one of my bills. Literally," Reese said.
Reese's comments incited heated debate on social media about a WNBA player strike resulting in higher salaries. The WNBA has never turned a profit in its existence and has been subsidized by the NBA.
Reese got in on the discussion when she called out conservative influencer AKA on X for a post that Reese said falsely claimed she demanded to be paid as much as NBA players.

On the bright side, we won’t be hounded for not watching anymore when the league folds.
Bkmk
The only thing good about the WNBA is there’s a white chick showing them all up. Lol
I actually watched some women’s college basketball due to the Clark-Reese rivalry. But for pro sports, I watch mostly the men; I’ll watch some women’s tennis. She and Clark are shooting themselves in the foot with their recent comments.
I watched women’s college bb because of Clark. She is nothing to me after that statement!
“The WNBA don’t pay my bills at all. I don’t even think it pays one of my bills. Literally,” Reese said”
I guess 73k a year doesn’t go as far as it used to. Won’t even pay her cell phone bill, the electric bill, the gas bill, the car payment....I mean “literally”. She is ignorant, I doubt she ever stepped foot into a classroom at LSU.
It’s lost on her if not for her 73k a year WNBA contract there wouldn’t be 2 million dollars of endorsements. Podcast money and the like. Stripper and pole dancing money maybe.
The entirety of the $$ problem, comparative to the NBA, can be deduced from the activity on FanDuel and DraftKings.
The WNBA loses money because hardly anyone bets on the WNBA regular season.
WNBA player go on strike, all 12 fans are upset.
So, they are threatening to have their employers lose less money?
SIT is an operative word here. IF you put the asses in the seats, you will be paid more. Nobody watches yall. Nobody buys season tickets. Yall dont make the money that men make playing basketball, cause yall dont bring in the money that they do. Dummy.
Time for wnba to go trans😎
The NBA should cut the WNBA off and let them run on their own. Then Reese can be paid exactly how much she deserves!
A lot of words come to mind like ungrateful selfish entitled delusional.
Go play in Russia.
I guess she is admitting that she made more money with LSU?
The WNBA is not yet an independent sports league. The revenue does not support the expenses. Essentially, the WNBA is a subsidiary of the NBA, like the G-League. There are indications that this may be changing. But if the league caves to this blackmail, they could smother the prospects for future success by killing the league's profitability and driving away investors.
Perhaps McDonalds was targeting their customer base.
I doubt it, the NBA has been the subsidizer of this one.
NBA is a 50% owner of the WNBA and has been subsidizing it since its founding in 1997.
The NBA was founded in 1949. I believe the NBA started to have profitable years as a league in the late 60s/early 70s.
It reportedly became profitable as a league consistently in the 80s. It has shown profits before then, but consistently good reliable profits happened in the 80s. This was partially due to the the NBA incurred a lot of debt during the 1976 merger with the ABA.
The NBA didn’t have another league subsidizing it... It didn’t have a hugely popular mens league promoting it... it built from scratch and was showing profits in less than the WNBA has been in existence.
The WNBA finally got a huge shot in the arm with Caitlin Clark coming to the league, and then managed to eff that up as well.
The WNBA is 28 years old now, and still hasn’t shown a profit, even with all the subsidies and promotion the NBA has put behind it.
The women want to make more, get WOMEN to show up for and watch your games... whether you like it or not, women largely do not care about the WNBA... and the game is not fast paced, competitive or exciting enough to draw in an audience consistently.
For crying out loud one of their “star” players and loudmouth angel reese, at 6’3 can’t consistently make a layup, when she’s fed the ball inside and literally self bounding her own layups before finally putting it in. Shooting percentage is < 50% (41%) when shooting at under 8’ distance. To put this in perspective, league wide, the Center shooting percentage average from all ranges for the NBA is 54%
