When I lived in Hawaii, some of my co-workers at the five-star resort were haoles born and raised in Hawaii. Most were from well-off families. When speaking with us, and guests, beautiful perfect English. Then when they had to interact with staff in Housekeeping or similar, their language morphed into 100% pidgin. I was in awe.

Unless it was really her childhood friend, Truman Capote, who was the model for Dill Harris. BTW, I went to grammar school with John Megna who played Dill in the film. He was three years behind me. He was the half brother to Connie Stevens, and his absolutely stunning and very sweet sister was in my year, but never in the same class.
