Putin says any Ukraine peace deal must ensure Russia's security, vows no retreat

Russia will seek a peace deal in Ukraine that safeguards its own long-term security and will not retreat from the gains it has made in the conflict, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday in comments to relatives of soldiers killed there.

Putin also took an indirect swipe at French President Emmanuel Macron, saying Western leaders should not underestimate the Russian people and should keep in mind the fate of Napoleon Bonaparte, whose invasion of Russia in 1812 ended in disaster.

"We must choose for ourselves a peace option that will suit us and that will ensure peace for our country in the long term," Putin told a group of Russian women who have lost loved ones during the three-year war in Ukraine.

Asked by the mother of one fallen soldier if Russia would retreat, Putin said he did not intend to do that. Russia currently controls just under a fifth of Ukraine - or about 113,000 square km.

At times during the meeting some women wiped away tears.

Except that Russia is the invader now.

Except that Russia is the invader now.

Only if you pretend history begins on a day of your choosing.

If the French and the British decide to put troops on the ground, you better do it right away. Because those nasty winters whether it’s in the Ukraine or in Russia is going to eat you up.

Russia’s nuclear arsenal means it can guarantee its own security.

--- "Only if you pretend history begins on a day of your choosing."

In a larger frame, that's exactly how the climate change and pandemic folks have been operating. Ditto with Muslims and their schisms and rage against others. So much depends on that "day of your choosing." The assumptions underlying other underlying assumptions can reveal much.

Oh is it ever, as the Germans learned to their fatal disadvantage. Invading Russia is a suicidal fool’s errand, it has been ever since the early 18th century when Charles the 12th of Sweden tried it and failed, as has every other European power that tried it since.

As part of the overall deal, Russia needs to completely demilitarize Kaliningrad.

In return, perhaps the EU can confer something like a “free port” status on the territory for locally produced goods and services.

"Except that Russia is the invader now."

No matter how many times you comment it out, it doesn't make it true.

The Ukrainians were key players in the coup against President Trump. The first impeachment was driven by President Trump's call to Zelensky and Ukrainian-born "whistle-blower" Col. Vindman was the impetus. Col. Vindman was offered the high position of Defense Minister of Ukraine THREE TIMES by the Ukraine - why? The coup against President Trump led us into the Ukraine War and the death of hundreds of thousands of people and the impoverishment of America. We are led by traitors and snakes.

Vindman, 44, explained during his impeachment testimony that he had been offered the position three times but declined the position because of his loyalty to the United States. The lieutenant colonel was born in Ukraine, but his family immigrated to the U.S. when he was a toddler.

Vindman claimed he did not know why he was offered the high ranking position of defense minister.

And, amazingly, after President Trump was only out of office a little over a year we were at war with Russia at the behest of the Ukraine.

What about the approximately 18,500 Russian-speaking Ukranians who were killed by the Nazi segment of the Ukranian military over several years? Also, whatever happened to the promise to not expand NATO. I believe they expanded into several European countries close to Russia.

Three words.

"Might is right".

It's irrelevant how I may "feel" about this matter.

Russia has a sphere of influence they are willing and able to enforce.

“Putin started this war. Period.”

Is like saying the one brother started the fight by hitting the other brother, after the other brother had been poking him for the last twenty miles as their parents drove down the road.
