Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has called on experts in his country to search for rare earth minerals, shortly after this set of elements shot to public prominence due to a possible mineral deal between the US and Ukraine.

Lukashenko instructed his Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko to ensure that Belarus is no longer geologically underdeveloped, state-run media reported.

“It is the number one topic today,” the Belarusian president said, referring to rare earths, which are used in key 21st century industries such as renewable energy.

“There are not a lot of them in the earth. Perhaps we have them as much as the others,” he added.

Will we ever get to a technology where these rare earths are no longer a “prize”.

Rare Earth are not really that rare!
We, in the US, have more of them, that we can process!
That is the problem! We got rid of mining them and even worse, processing them!
All smelters are in China! So they can charge any price.

We need to do more mining, but even more, more processing, build some smelters and refineries!

Unfortunately, in current legal, regulatory, NIMBY, and “green” environment, nothing new can be build!

We need to cut the red tape!

I’m actually on board with not mining our own rare earth minerals until we’ve exhausted mining everyone else’s. It’s not like they’re putting more in the ground.

Earth First!

We’ll mine the other planets, later.

Well, like I said, they are not really that rare!
They are kind of hard to get.
