Their results showed that when cesium-137 was used, the battery generated 288 nanowatts. Yet with the much stronger isotope cobalt-60, the battery produced 1.5 microwatts of power, about enough to switch on a tiny sensor.

Makes sense, cesium-137 has a half-life of 30 years, cobalt-60 has a half-life of 5.2 years.

...a prototype about 4 cubic centimeters SMALL

How does that differ from a "...a prototype about 4 cubic centimeters BIG"?

If colleges and universities would stick to this important research instead of having protesting as a major, this country would succeed in leaps and bounds. Very interesting article and possibly a useful way to use nuclear waste.

Somehow utilizing the most dangerous radionucleides (potent gamma emitters) to produce microwatts of power seems kind of misguided.

[yes, I read the article about using these batts in already highly radioactive environments]

But it’s early in the research loop, I admit.

The battery is small and lightweight, but will need 200 pounds of lead shielding if used in a cellphone.

Great! We'd need a 5.2 X 1010 cc battery to run the oven in the house.

Beta radiation is Electrons. You’d think using isotopes that decayed that way would be the natural choice for batteries.
