Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Texas) died late Tuesday after serving just two months and a day in Congress, party officials said Wednesday. He was 70.

Turner, who was elected in 2024 to replace longtime Houston-area Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee following her death while in office, had attended President Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress the night of his passing.

“We were on the floor together last night. You never know for whom the bell will toll next,” Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who was ejected from the House chamber for repeatedly disrupting Trump’s remarks.

Texas has "uniform election dates" for special elections.

The special election will be held on the first Saturday in May in an odd-numbered year. This would put the special election on May 3.

I remember reading years ago that ever person living has cancerous cells and most times the body can kill them, sometimes not and the cancer develops.

so I agree with no such thing as cancer free.

Best we can do is make as many healthy choices as possible to keep immune system up to speed.

This is a solidly Democratic seat. It has been a “black” seat mostly within the Houston city limits. Former representatives include Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland, Craig Washington, and Sheila Jackson Lee. No chance it will be a Republican gain.

Perhaps Greg Abbott can appoint a Representative more in line with Trumps policies.

I wish Abbott could replace Turner with a Republican but can’t...no one can tell me that Dist. 18 can’t come up with a Demonrat that isn’t radical and out of their minds with leftist politics. President Trump might be able to come to Houston and endorse a candidate that’s at least somewhat moderate. But I dream.....

There has to be a special election; Abbott cannot appoint to a U.S. House seat. The seat will remain empty pending the special election.

Perhaps not. The voters will pick the candidate, not the governor.

Sylvester Turner, like James Garfield before him, as named after a cartoon cat. Neither one lived long in office.

You never know for whom the bell will toll next

Do not ask for whom the bell tolls - it tolls for thee.

Hopefully...

>>Can the Governor appoint a replacement? In other words are we gaining a seat?<<

No, a special election will be held and it's a guaranteed Demonrat seat...

Yes, I knew that. I hope Turners replacement isn’t a crazy-arsed lunatic. That’s why I said maybe Trump could come to Houston and try and find that replacement and endorse him/her.

Since it's a district in Houston, I can guarantee you that the replacement will be a "crazy-arsed lunatic" as you mentioned. Just look at the prior representatives from that district.
