In the Four Quartets TS Eliot wrote “humankind cannot bear very much reality”.
At moments in history like these, when there is simply too much head-spinning change and too many postwar assumptions being ripped from their moorings, it sometimes appears too much for any human to absorb, let alone offer a response.
In particular in the weeks between JD Vance’s speech to the Munich security conference to the moment when Donald Trump cut off all US military aid to Ukraine, a concept is being tested – and possibly to destruction: that the US president remains open to European persuasion.
For many, the consequences of viewing Trump as more allied with Russia than Europe has simply been too momentous to contemplate. The belief in a close relationship between western Europe and the US that has dominated government policy in, for instance, Berlin, Helsinki, London and Rome is being put under intolerable strain.
The pressure is especially acute for Keir Starmer, much lauded for the calmness with which he has tried to retain focus on the essential objective of keeping the US in alliance with Europe over the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

Maybe they should “give peace a chance.”
“Maybe they should “give peace a chance.””
I remember the European LECTURING us NON-STOP during the Cold War, convinced that the US wanted World War 3. Of course we never did want that, as Reagan later proved.
Now Europe actually DOES WANT World War 3 and Trump isn’t so hot on the idea. So, like you say, Europe is going to “give peace a chance”, whether the like it or not.
They’ll have to pay for it themselves.
I didn’t know that “persuasion” meant constant, nagging, yelling, and insults.
Which is why we have the Guardian, Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mirror, Express, Sun and all over there, to further ignore "much reality" in favor of narrative management, wrap up smears, anonymous sources aplenty, much as our legacy media here.
Manchester Guardian article looks like it was written in Bizarro World and then telefaxed between the B.W. dimension to OUR Earth ...
nonetheless, it looks like it’s dawning on Bizarro World western europe that they’re gonna have to solve whatever problems they choose to create for themselves WITHOUT the United States ...
We don’t care Europe
As the President of Poland pointed out. 500,000,000 Europeans do not need 330,000,000 Americans to protect them from 140,000,000 Russians
Unlike other leaders in the west, he is not a wishy-washy leader whatsoever. When he says he will walk away, that too is the truth.
Meanwhile Europe provides bluster, that is BS from start to finish. The pretend to care about Ukraine, but what they really want is to capture Russia's wealth beause the are sinking financially, and that is because they refuse to do what is best. Instead they follow pipedreams to the buttr end.
In other words, they are ignorant liars for the mot part, because they ceded their backbones to the U.S. in exchange for their own safety & for social programs being paid by the American taxpayer.
That is what this revolution is about, and we voted Trump in to lead that revolution with hopes that Europe will wake up finally and get serious about their own security, instead of relying upon us forever.
Those days are over. When the people start voting out the liars and elect the serious, then we will be on the same page once again. We are hoping that you do Europe, for all of our sakes.
I really think the Euro elites think the only way they maintain power is via WWIII. They’re that insane.
I feel a European tantrum coming on.
Trump is not Joe Biden .
He’s not going to pay for a war while a bunch of European poofs sit around having wine and cheese at their Zelensky butt sniffing soirees.
Phil Goff can support Ukraine and send his young people along with the cash. To hell with the ingrates ...
Thanks for the link. Most amusing and enlightening then, as now.
I had to look up the acronym, NSFW. Even a dinosaur can be updated.... :)
Decisions are being made without them and they'll just have to get used to it or face the consequences.
Biden, Obama, Bush, Clinton were humoring them the whole time. Personally, if I was treated like that, I'll be insulted.
I'll rather be Switzerland. Just minding my own business.
