WASHINGTON, Friday, March 3.
Congress has worked with great vigor to-day, and in the House business so far progressed, last night, that whatever important measures were brought up to-day were not rushed through with as much carelessness as has marked similar occasions heretofore.
The Senate, being a less active and heavier body, is further behind, though much has been done to-day. The Senate, yesterday, held a continuous session of fourteen hours, without adjournment. A large number of committee reports were made in the Senate this morning, and the committees discharged from the consideration of a great many "bones of contention." When the Post Route Bill came up, Mr. SUMNER made an attempt to galvanize the Delaware and Raritan Railroad Bill, by attaching it as an amendment, but it was voted down with as much emphasis as on yesterday; so Camden and Amboy rule for another year. The amendatory Tariff Bill, which is a model of brevity this session, was passed with a few amendments, the most important of which is the change of the additional duty on railroad iron to ten cents. The House made it fifteen, and a Committee of Conference will settle it. A provision was also inserted providing that contractors who were affected by changes in the present tariffs on contracts, prior to its adoption, may increase their charges accordingly.
The contestants for seats from Louisiana have got well paid, though they have not got their seats. Mr. DAWES, from the Committee on Elections, reported in favor of paying the gentlemen two thousand dollars each for expenses. Unless they have been very extravagant, this will pay their Washington hotel-bills for about three months, at the rates they charge.
