European leaders on edge as prospect looms of Trump pulling 20K troops from continent

"The Europeans have a serious problem of readiness … that they’re trying to fix, but it takes time," Camille Grand, a former NATO official who is now with the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in a Washington Post report Sunday. "If Trump decides ‘I’m going to pull out U.S. troops from Germany because I’m upset with the trade imbalance,’ that’s much more complicated to manage than to say we have a plan to do this within X years."

They’ve had DECADES.

Honestly, nothing they say now can be taken seriously, as they’re just going to defer in the hopes that some warmongering Dems get back into office and reestablish the Grift State.

From Grok:

As of the most recent data available in early 2025, the number of U.S. troops stationed in Europe is approximately 65,754 active-duty personnel, according to a Department of Defense report cited by Newsweek on February 14, 2025. This figure reflects troop levels across the United States European Command (EUCOM) area of responsibility as of June 30 of the previous year. The top five countries hosting these troops are Germany (34,894), Italy (12,319), the United Kingdom (10,180), Spain (3,253), and Turkey (1,683).

I don’t think that US bases in Europe were ever argued as owed. It makes sense for America, though, to stop any fighting that breaks out - in Europe, though.

There are many downsides to this policy, however. You are correct that NATO weakens Europe and a continued American presence has fostered ill-will.

Times change, also, and I think there is no longer any sense (or negative sense) in NATO and in US bases in a unified Germany.

With what America spends on a Europe who hates us, we could buy Greenland! ;-)

“Remember “Yankee Go Home”?

My dad was US Army. We were stationed in Italy in the late 60s......I heard that pretty frequently.

In a very large sense, US policy has reduced Europe into a state of “learned incompetence” similar to the way that doing everything for children leaves them unable to function on their own. It served US policy for Europe to be dependent on us, and brought military, political, and economic benefits in resisting Soviet expansion, but at a price we can no longer afford. The cost/benefit analysis only pencils if we have a major adversary to resist. Thus the panic in some circles to keep Russia in that role.

Why only 10%? I’d yank all 100,000 Americans off the continent. Furthermore, What have these clowns been doing over the last half century?

Maybe if they weren’t so quick to insult President Trump and the USA, this might not be happening.

What Europe has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt is that they are a bunch of grifters sponging off the USA to fund their generous public works, while we pay for their defense.

Right now, Britain has less than 30,000 total front line troops. Also they have less than 50 operational tanks.

No way this happens without a big buddy to pay for your defense for you. The rest of Europe is mostly the same...

Postings 1 and 2 are spot on. We have allowed the world’s trash to abuse our largess, not kindness, because Americans have to pay for 30 trillion debt. Americans have been abused by the world leaders, and local leaders. The world is finding out the s*** is hitting the fan, and Europe and American cheaters are on the wrong side.

Poland has stated repeatedly they want the US bases.
Notice which countries are begging for war?
The former Soviet ones.

They still do, but the surrounding areas of the bases also need our money.
I know in Del Din lots of Italian women were looking for a soldier husband.
Most of European men are low T and the gals there knew they could trade up.
Another reason why all this crap about EU sending troops, they have neutered their males.

Actually it’s not begging for war, rather it is begging for a deterrent to prevent war.

Notice that Putin does not invade countries that have joined NATO.

In 2008 Georgia requested to join NATO and the request was turned down by Germany and France “for fear of provoking Putin”.

Was Putin pleased by NATO refusing Georgia? Nope - 6 weeks later he invaded Georgia precisely BECAUSE they were not in NATO
