LOS ANGELES -- The 2025 Oscars are officially here.
Conan O'Brien is hosting the 97th Academy Awards, which honor the best in cinema from the past year.
"Emilia Pérez" leads the field of nominees this year with 13 total Oscar nominations, just one shy of tying the record for most nominations by a single film held by "All About Eve," "Titanic" and "La La Land."
"The Brutalist" and "Wicked" follow closely behind with 10 nominations each, while "A Complete Unknown" and "Conclave" round out the top-nominated films with eight nods apiece.
This year's show will honor the city of Los Angeles, showcasing its resilience in the wake of the wildfires that left at least 29 dead and destroyed thousands of homes.
The Oscars ceremony is live on ABC now and is streaming live on Hulu for the first time.
Follow along below with updates throughout the night, and check out all coverage of the 2025 Oscars here.
To all who haven’t seen Anora, here is a synopsis, without giving away the ending:
The movie starts in a strip club. It gives you ALL the experiences... visual and otherwise, of being in a strip club, from a worker POV.
One young lady connects with a young Russian guy, who seems to have endless amounts of money. They agree to meet, outside the club, in his mansion... where they constantly F*ck like rabbits.
They decide to fly to Vegas, where the F*ck like rabbits, and decide to marry.
His rich Russian parents find out he has married. They decide to come to the US to annull the marriage, and.. hilarity ensues....
Fron that point on, it’s actually pretty funny, if you can get past the language.
Now you know how much I pay attention to Hollyweird.
I had no idea.
Thanks.
Congratulations to Mr. Brody...He had a long speech...He did talk about dealing with “hate” at the end...He did speak out against anti-Semitism...
The Pianist was a good flick, even if directed by the rapist - and Holocaust survivor - Polanski. Not giving Polanski a pass, but maybe undergoing and surviving the Holocaust totally f***s up a person.
I will not see The Brutalist. Don't want to see homosexual rape depicted on screen. If Brody spoke out about anti-Semitism, good for him.
The Oscar show ended around 10:44 PM Eastern Time...Before midnight...3 hours and 44 minutes...I think that it was still a long show...
"A Complete Unknown"...I watched that film in the theater...I think that he did a good job as Bob Dylan...However, I got bored at times...I did fall asleep...
Wicked was good. Probably better if you’ve never seen the play. Once you know the plot, much of the mystery is gone.
The costumes WERE GREAT! And the production. Not surprised it won for those.
Same as, the SOUND for DUNE 2. It was phenomenal, and a huge part of the movie’s success.
All in all, one of the better Academy Awards shows in recent years. Conan was funny. Not too many political messages. Most of the best movies won. The tranny movie won... what? Anything? Oh yea, best SUPPORTING Actres.. a REAL woman. perfect
i just watched the substance
supposed to be a horror film
i was laughing alot
especially at the end
They had TOO MANY scenes of his girlfriend looking sad....
I thought the music was GREAT. Both Timothy and Monica Barbaro LOOKED and SOUNDED far better than Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. THAT made the movie.
Rummyfan you are totally in the right not to see Brutalist. I did and had I not been with someone else, would have walked out in the first 5-10 minutes. Unfortunately had to sit through the thing, which, to be fair - had good editing because as long as it was plus intermission, the pacing made it feel less long - but the content that would just get thrown as the movie wore on would get progressively more grotesque and hideous — rendering the rest of the plot irrelevant. The scene you’re alluding to was particularly perverse. And it’s almost as if it’s setting the “Oscar bait” norm now — that if you DON’T include such a scene your movie will NOT get any nods.
The director and lead actress of Anora both acknowledged the sex worker community and how they will continue to be allies.
So in case anyone was wondering; this is how we can be better allies to sex workers. *face palm*

OK: 1., 2. and 3. ...
4. i didn’t even know the Oscars were still a thing and that they were on TV tonight ... thanks for letting me know ... i think ... [btw, do they still hand out those little statues to people for doing stuff?]
5. i thought the main purpose of the oscars was to announce support for various obscure 3rd world shitholes; first it was support for Biafra, then it was support for the Hutus (or was it the Tutsies), then support for the Palestinians, and now support for Ukraine ... My question is: When will Hollywood announce its support for Americans?
So there was an earthquake in L.A. just now…
Seems to me you have to go to either Los Angeles or NYC to see these Oscar-nominated movie shorts (documentary, animated, etc.). Is that correct?
No wonder Hollyweird nominated this film for Best Picture. 🤢🙄
Conclave follows the woke formula for movies these days, conservatives are bad, liberal lefties are good, Church is full of evil men, there are no absolutes, and yes the new Pope is trans!! and a saint!
I agree. Good movies are still being made. But the major studios have been spiraling downward and the saving remnant of good films are increasingly found among low and mid budget indies. They are often not highly promoted and it can tske some work to find them.
The last several years, I’ve had no problem finding a top ten list of reasonably conservative films, which I’ve posted to the movie ping list. I’m not even going to try for 2024. So many movies were pushed back due to the strikes — which produced a lost year — that the pickings are slim. I’ve seen a few. I’m sure there are more that I’ve not yet discovered.
I always encourage freepers to sound off when they see something good. We are strong on kvetching about woke c**p, but we need to pass the word on good films.
THE PIANIST was better than THE BRUTALIST...
THE BRUTALIST also has scenes of drug abuse...The main character (Adrien Brody) was a heroin addict...
I watched THE SUBSTANCE also...The ending...It was shocking...
