World War I is on my mind

Posted on 02/28/2025 12:54:35 PM PST by 2manydegrees

When German and Russian defense sensitivities led Russia to mobilize and Germany to respond; and then Poland became a target for division between the two, all of Europe and then the U.S. became participants in a trench war that killed millions of young men.

When the health system of the time was totally unable to cope with the influenza that followed the war, millions more died.

I don't want to see that for my family, my country or my world.

As much as I dislike the Russian history of paranoid aggression, and as much as I admire Ukraine's determined resistance to the Russian military, I do not want to see my admiration turned into a perverse willingness to oppose Russia right down to the last American dollar and the last Ukrainian soldier.

We must stop before our generation crosses the same line that led all Europe and some of America into World War I and its consequences.

My position is: Stop shooting, scare Russia with the right mix of threats and reassurance, make a deal with Ukraine and try to make the next decade better.

Trump may be trying to do that. I hope so.

You have a very ... er ... unique ... version of the history of WWI.

This war is proof that Russia, short of going nuclear hasn’t got the strength to take over Europe.

Over 2 years now and they still haven’t crushed Ukraine. Ukraine cannot win, but Russia has been bloodied beyond what anyone could have thought before the war started.

I know every time you used the word Biden, you meant his “handlers”.

If you went back in time to 1910, you would have seen a thriving Christian Europe amongst the major powers. Sure there were some rivalries but no one could have imagined the sheer horror headed their way or their absolute refusal to stop it after it started.

More and more countries entered the fray to the detriment of all and left Europe so scared that Communism took hold in Russia and Hitler took hold in Germany making them do it all over again in 1939...

World War II is more on my mind, specifically the Munich Agreement, Chamberlin and “Peace for our time”.

There’s an excellent TV BBC dramatization of the month long run up to the war call “37 Days”. I think I saw it on one of the cable channels. Here’s a link to the DVD.

It is NOT credible to claim that ‘Russia’ has not crushed Ukraine, as IF there were NOT hiding in the shadows NATO+ US separately .... HOW does that look that all these combined could NOT stave off the Russian bear? The US taxpayer sent the mighty Z 350 billion dollars ... hello and they could NOT beat back the bear nation... toooo much coke flowing and real estate purchases across the earth to really be concentration upon fighting the Russia bear!!!!

The US played like a Russian Harlot of Korea and Vietnam in proxy wars and look where we literally are ... Sure NOT a ‘win’ for the home team... The mighty Z is still a coke addict and acting like we owe him... WHO are his handlers? Vicky Nuland? Porky Soros? Clevand’s own Kolomoisky?

I have always avoided reading about World War I. Of all the most useless, bloodiest wars in history, that hideous war has got to be number one.

The British lost about twenty thousand men killed in a few hours in just one battle.

I saw a documentary about the war; they were interviewing an old, old, (and weeping after all those years), German soldier who said he operated a machine gun in a battle. He said he just quit firing he was so sick of killing so many British as they climbed out of their trenches and across the no-man’s land.

Hard to decipher you rambling, but in no way did I show any support for throwing money to Ukraine.

But Ukraine is still not totally defeated yet and Russia has lost hundreds of thousands of men, and much of their military equipment.

They are not ready to start to rumble across all of Europe...

I do not want to see my admiration turned into a perverse willingness to oppose Russia

What willingness to oppose Russia? Bush first catered to Putin, then Obama did. Remember, Obama promised Putin, he would be more flexible to do what Putin wanted after he got reelected. He promised him Ukraine, Georgia, and other countries.

And Putin has interfered in every election to help Democrats. He came out and endorsed Biden, then Kamala last year.

Why does the U.S. have to grovel before Russia?

Trump will turn his attention to Russia in due course, he just needs the right team in place, and Zelenskyy won’t be part of that team.

Yes he does, but be advised that his is a double edge sword so to speak. He acknowledges that without US entering the war the allies may have lost or at least would have prolonged the war. But he criticized th US for waiting so long to engage which led to the extended and costly stalemates on the battlefields.

He is very critical of President Woodrow Wilson’s insistence on the formation of the League of Nations and the severe restrictions and financial demands Wilson insisted be imposed on the Germans, which led to the failure of the post-war German government and contributed to the rise of NAZIs and Hitler.
