World War I is on my mind

Posted on 02/28/2025 12:54:35 PM PST by 2manydegrees

When German and Russian defense sensitivities led Russia to mobilize and Germany to respond; and then Poland became a target for division between the two, all of Europe and then the U.S. became participants in a trench war that killed millions of young men.

When the health system of the time was totally unable to cope with the influenza that followed the war, millions more died.

I don't want to see that for my family, my country or my world.

As much as I dislike the Russian history of paranoid aggression, and as much as I admire Ukraine's determined resistance to the Russian military, I do not want to see my admiration turned into a perverse willingness to oppose Russia right down to the last American dollar and the last Ukrainian soldier.

We must stop before our generation crosses the same line that led all Europe and some of America into World War I and its consequences.

My position is: Stop shooting, scare Russia with the right mix of threats and reassurance, make a deal with Ukraine and try to make the next decade better.

Trump may be trying to do that. I hope so.

He must have visited the WWI museum ... for me it was just plain surreal ... ‘nationalism’ these freaks that plot and plan these wars also dream up the narrative they plan to use to smear God fearing peoples.

Sadly the majority think ‘communism’ means the Soviet Union, means and methodology ... when in fact any populace that views ‘government’ as god(s) are communists... Thou shalt have NO other gods before Me...

I didn’t ask you, but while you’re here, are you OK with Holodomor2?

What’s really interesting about WW I is that it was a family fight between the relatives of the noble families. At the end, only the British royalty survived.

That always fascinated me as well. All the royalty of Europe seemed so intent to go to war in 1914. And they ALL wound up dead or deposed. Even the British Monarchy took a further step down in its submission to Parliament. The UK lost Ireland, etc....

One would think everyone would be more cautious when going to war. The outcome is rarely what planners and promoters expect.

I see a similar situation with Ukraine of the last 10 years. Both Brussels and the American Democrats and DC Deep state were gung-ho supporters of making Russia into an enemy, and using Ukraine as a spear to poke them

Just like the monarchies of Europe in 1914, they destroyed the status quo, lost control of events, and saw their power overthrown and their narrative destroyed.

I’m sure folks had similar thoughts when Germany went into Belgium in 1940.

Peace between Ukraine and Russia would be great, but if Putin gets to keep territory, there’s no reason he won’t take more once Trump’s out of office.

Putin won’t live forever either, but unlike in the US, he will be able to select his successor who will likely have the same ambitions.

And as Russia’s ambition includes control of the artic, I’m pretty sure they’ll eventually go for Alaska when another retard like Biden is in office who won’t mind a “minor incursion”.

Clearly, you haven't caught on yet: FR in particular, and the US in general, have moved beyond the nonsense cliches and false comparisons regarding Ukraine.

Please wake up. Your beloved puppet Zelensky was just unceremoniously kicked out of the White House today.

Understood and agree.

The other war that is stuck in my mind is Vietnam. Kamala’s handlers would have sent troops to Ukraine as the only card left, and we would have been feinting and parrying with the Russians until President AfterHarris threw in the towel, we lost everything, and had a few thousand or ten thousands of body bags. Trump is doing what JFK might have done if he had lived, and not what LBJ did, which was to sacrifice our soldiers. Kyiv needs a clean divorce from Russia, with all the costs, rather than a spouse-murder.

Biden is no hero for anybody in this very real war, nor will he ever be seen this way by any future historian.

He is the fool that let a “bad feelings” toward Russia lead us toward a war that we didn’t want and were only willing to fight with words and tax dollars.

We have only “paper and shadows” allies. They are egging us into action that will commit us much deeper.

Biden didn’t see any of this. He believed that Ukrainian magic would make Russian troops eventually go away, sometime, maybe, after another million dead perhaps. Heck, he though (if he thought at all) a few billion dollars will hardly be missed and we can keep NATO and Russia in a hostile, but stable, balance for ever and ever.

Biden was a fool operating in an illusion.

We are just now confronting reality.

“Guns of August” is a good introduction.

This book has some surprising insights on how Europe stumbled into war - “The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914”.

You are completely right about the really bad possibility that Putin will continue into some unlimited future aggression.

I don’t think that Biden was right that the correct response was Ukrainian dead and American money and involvement, and hopes that NATO would step up and do the paying and the dying.

I’m hoping that Putin is a little scared of Ukraine and NATO and a lot scared of Trump. He might even be tired of the dying without the winning.

“I want to read a really good book about WWI. Any suggestions?”

The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman.

That’s the best I’ve read on the war.

I recommend Winston Churchill’s six volume masterpiece “The World Crisis”. Told by him from his perspective as a key, and some may argue somewhat failed participant due to Gallipoli. It really is compelling. (BTW it may show up as only five volumes since volume five was published in two parts.)

You may even be able to find it at low cost or even free on Amazon Kindle.

I forgot about the “sleepwalkers” concept.

That is the way I see Biden and NATO- Little foresight, murky objectives, careless talk with no power foundation, leading to disastrous perceived commitments.

When German and Russian defense sensitivities led Russia to mobilize and Germany to respond; and then Poland became a target for division between the two, all of Europe and then the U.S. became participants in a trench war that killed millions of young men.

Poland, more properly the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was divided between Austria, Germany in Russia and disappeared from the map of Europe in 1795. The partitioning powers allowed little industrialization of of those lands because they knew that these lands would be either in rebellion to regain lost independence, or fought over by the partitioning powers. They were very prescient since much of WWI and WWII was fought there.

With the Bolshevik Revolution unfolding in Russia, Poland became the substitute for Russia on Germany's Eastern border. Poland was reborn at Versailles. Wilson pushed for that. Since the new Polish state required the assistance of its stronger allies, it was required to accept their approval of its final borders. With arms from Britain and France, Poland defeated Russia in 1921 when it attempted to regain lands in Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. (Russia fought other battles in the Baltic states as well.) Lenin offered to recreate the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth and offered to cede all of Belarus and all of Ukraine to it. Britain and France balked at that proposal, and because of that, the Poles rejected it.

What was won on the battlefield, was lost at the peace table. Poland was recreated too small to defend itself, while millions starved in Ukraine and Belarus under Stalin's decree to confiscate their food. Ultimately, that is the genesis of the present war in Ukraine. Modern Ukraine was forged in WWII after Stalin deported the Poles, and declared a new "Ukrainian" ethnicity from the former Ruthenians, and those of mixed ethnicity, and Stalin exterminated the Ukrainian Jews and assimilated the ethnic Germans in Galicia. So, yes, the present conflict in Ukraine has its roots in WWI and Versailles.

“Me too. I want to read a really good book about WWI. Any suggestions?”

Dan Carlin has an absolutely excellent 5 part audio production called “Blueprint for Armageddon” in “Hardcore History” which I viewed perhaps 2 years ago. It was free then. Now, as I look for it, it looks they want money for it. It is on Spotify, I don’t know if it is free there. Each segment is about 1.25 > 2 hours.

If you keep searching for “Blueprint for Armageddon” and “Hardcore History” you *may* be able to find a free version.

Yes! Try this!

5 segments, free.
